Chapter 7:
Cory woke having to be and not having any idea where she was. As soon
as she sat up she remembered it all.
"He is Elder Scott."
"Never heard of him."
"He is a brand new elder, only 17 and he is from Barenechu. You
remember how every four years Barenchu and Iscort exchange an Elderie, or
Elder to be. Well Scott was just given the ceremony of Elder being
yesterday and he leaves in a week for Barenchu."
"Then how will he advise me? If he is in Barenchu and I am in
Iscort?"
"You are to go with him to Barenchu."
"For how long?"
"Until your training is complete."
"That's two years! I won't see Toby or Marie for two years! I won't
be able to visit the Silver or Crimson gardens for two years?"
"Oh no." Cory got out of bed and searched for the bathroom. After
finding it, and using it, she got dressed in the simplest outfit she owned,
her trainers robe and tunic, of course in black. Then not having a clue
where to go, she decided to try and find food.
Cory got out of bed and walked down the inside flight of stairs,
where she came across a door. She opened it and walked in.
She wondered around the room that looked exactly like hers. It wasn't
till she came across a book marked Scott that she remembered this was his
room. She picked up the book and started to flip through it.
"Can I help you?" Scott's voice broke through her thoughts.
Cory spun around dropping the book on the floor.
"Hi, Scott? Is this your room?"
"Yes." Scott stepped forward and bent to pick up the book. As he
stood up a picture fell out of the book. Cory bent to pick it up.
"Who is this?" Cory held out the picture, which in actuality was an
ID photo for adoption. It had a picture of young boy, with brown hair and
sad brown eyes.
"No one important." Scott grabbed the picture, somewhat hastily in
Cory's eyes and stuffed it in the book. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to find food. While the room is great it doesn't contain a
map so I was forced to go about it the old fashioned way."
"What way is that"
"Smell and exploring, but now that I've found a native of the land
would you care to lead be to the edibles?"
"It would be a pleasure 'O foreign one'" Scott opened his door and
they exited.
Downstairs they sat at the table eating waffles with blueberries and
syrup.
"This is great, in Barenchu we only got fruit on special occasions."
Cory said between mouthfuls.
"I know it was the hardest thing to get used to; well that and going
from having my own room to sharing one with four other guys."
"Only four, you're lucky, most people had ten to a room."
"Too bad for them, hey pass the syrup."
Cory looked up from her waffles to hand Scott the syrup when "Good
morning Jeo!"
"Good morning missy. Good morning Master Scott." Jeo set more waffles
down on the table "Are you enjoying your breakfast?"
"It is so good Jeo! We need someone like you back in Barenchu!" Cory
shoved another bit in her mouth "Of course back home, I mean back in
Barenchu... excuse me for a second."
Scott and Jeo watched as Cory walked out of the room.
"This is just great, how am I supposed to teach her if she can't even
talk about Barenchu?"
"Give her to Master Scott, she needs..."
"Drop the master Scott thing you never call me that normally."
"She needs time to adjust. Remember when you first move to Barenchu
you couldn't talk about Iscort for weeks."
"That was different I was young."
"Not much younger then her, and much more mature. Besides you should
get going."
"Why I have nowhere to be?"
"Then why on earth did you drag young missy here days before
schedule? Even if you don't have anywhere to be I suggest you clear out!"
"Thanks Jeo, can I have some more waffles first?"
"Have them to go." Jeo left and walked right into Cory who was
looking at her luggage.
"Can I help you missy?"
"No I'm just looking for my screen. I figured I have nothing to do
all week so I might as well set up my screen."
"Or you could go out and look around the town."
"Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. That might actually not be a bad
idea." Cory stood up "thanks Jeo. Wait what should I do?"
"Why don't you go up to the community center and see if there are any
teenagers hanging around there. Since it's a Saturday lots of trainees hang
out there."
"That's great, thanks again Jeo. Should I ask Scott?"
"No, just be back when you here the bell chime, that's curfew, and
our dinner."
"All right, I guess I'll go then." Cory turned ran out the room then
ran back. "Where is the community center?"
