Bubble

“Come back with me,” he urged, beckoning me over.

I shot him a questioning look, “What for?” I asked, sitting back down in my bubble. “I like it here. Look what I can do,” I raised my hand and the sky turned from light to dark to light again and conjured up a rainbow. “See?” I prompted up at him.

“That’s…really nice,” he nodded then looked at me. “But there’s nobody else here. What if you get lonely?”

“I can’t get lonely. I’m here with my thoughts, with my dreams. I have everything I need right here,” I told him. “Why don’t you come with me?” I asked.

He gave me a wan smile. “If I came with you, I still wouldn’t be here. I would have my own bubble and I don’t want to be alone.”

“I’m not alone,” I shrugged. “You won’t be alone. Look,” I made another hand gesture and all our friends appeared around us, laughing, talking, and having fun. “See? Everyone’s here. There’s no place to be lonely here.”

He looked around, not smiling anymore. “This isn’t real. They’re not real. You can’t talk to them or anything.”

“I could if I wanted to,” I explained. “Besides, they’re not different from people out there. They’re not really themselves either. They don’t really listen so you can’t talk to them either really.”

He sighed.

“It’s beautiful here,” I told him. “You can have everything you want, be anything you want, nobody to stop you. No rules except your own. No expectations, nobody with false intentions. You’ll never get hurt or sad. You can be happy all the time—except when you want to be sad of course, which you can also do. No time, past, future. No planning, no frustrations, no problems.”

“Then that’s no life,” he pointed out.

I blinked. “Who said I wanted a life? I just want to have this,” I shrugged. “This is perfect for me.”

“For you,” he said, “but what about everyone else out there who miss you and care about you. They’re looking for you right now. They’re really sad because they can’t find you. They just want to reach you.”

I pursed my lips. “Tell them all to come here then,” I said.

He shook his head. “That’s not possible.”

I frowned. “Then they don’t care about me as much as they say they do,” I concluded then stood up. “You know what they say about anything being possible, that’s here, in this world,” I explained. “You know that saying ‘you can’t always have everything you want’, well, you can have it here.”

“You can’t stay here forever,” he said.

“Yes, I can. Forever doesn’t even exist here,” I rationalized, “but it could, if I wanted it to. Don’t you see how easy and simple everything is here? Why do you all want to complicate things and stay out there? I don’t understand.”

“Everyone else is out there.”

“I don’t want to be like everyone else,” I said stubbornly.

“You’re already not,” he said. “The fact that you even have this place is an indication of that but you have to go back to where everyone is.”

“Why can’t you all just be happy for me? Why does everyone insist on making me go back to that place where I’ll have nothing and always be unhappy?”

“With everyone’s help, you won’t be unhappy,” he told me.

“Well, I don’t want everyone’s help. I’m perfectly fine by myself here. I want to be independent and self-sufficient.”

“Needing people doesn’t mean you’re weak and helpless. It just means you’re human,” he explained.

“I’m not human here. I’m special here,” I said.

“Special to whom?” he prompted.

I blinked, taken aback. “Special to myself,” I countered, “and that’s all that matters anyway.”

“How can you be so selfish?” he asked. “Why do you always only think about yourself?”

“Because nobody else is going to take care of me the way I can, the way I want to. Nobody’s going to look out for me except myself, because they’ll all be too busy looking after themselves. Tell me that’s not true.”

He paused then nodded. “That is true,” he confirmed. “But this is all just an illusion,” he gestured around.

“I’d rather have the illusion,” I said resolutely.

He paused for a moment then said with an understanding nod. “I guess I see what you mean.”

“No, you don’t,” I pointed out, “because if you really did see what I mean, you’d be here as well.”

“No, I won’t, see ‘cause,” he started, “I’d rather take my chances with reality.”

“You’d rather be played by every stupid cosmic force out there with a cruel sense of humor than control your own life?” I prompted, expectantly.

“I’d rather not play god with my life,” he replied. “I’d rather live.” He glanced back behind him then looked back at her after a minute. “I have to go now. They’re calling me back.”

“Go,” I waved him away.

“Are you sure I can’t convince you to come along?” he asked. “I don’t want to have to leave you here by yourself.”

“I’m not alone,” I pointed out. “I’m not leaving.”

He looked at me uncertainly.

“You don’t have to feel sorry for me,” I told him. “I choose this.” He sighed heavily before he turned back then disappeared into thin air.
