Wondering how it'd be to take life for a spin
As I'm standing here on the edge, looking in.
I hear myself say "there's only one way to know",
So I get a running start, then jump, and here I go.
Swimming through the masses of fishlike folks.
Their faces are like sunny-side-ups without yolks-
Blank and staring straight ahead, they don't care
That they are all just the same, they don't dare
To ever be different from the next one in line
Their lives are pointless, like forks without tines.
But then the crowds part and a new kind of fish,
Colorful as a rainbow and as unique as you'd wish,
Comes darting in and out of the uncaring crowd.
Not apathetic, nor pathetic, just energetic and proud.
The look in his eyes says he's been past the shore,
Above the drab waves, and he knows there's more-
More to do, more to see, more to find, more to be.
I know I have the same look when he smiles at me.
He disappears again amidst the quagmire of faces
As he's off to learn more, to brighten new places.
I find myself heading back through all this gray
To find my way up to the glorious light of day.
As I swim back up the sun's rays seem to pave
A road of light leading up through the waves.
Climb back onto the ledge, so glad to be free-
Free from the ongoing drabness, free to be me.
But I know I'll come back soon to bring light
And color to the drifting people of bleak sight.
