Once upon a time, we flew above the clouds
In an ever after, we touched rainbows with our fingers
In a sleeping dream, we were inseparable, sailing always forever
But dreams took the plunge as ambition blackened the heart
We no longer flew above the clouds,
We no more touched rainbows with outstretched hands
We never again were allowed to sail onwards forever
The dreams faded when you left this earth
They pulsed out of life as your heart beat its last
They ache to be revived, renewed
Lost to you because of greed, now I suffer guilt
Maybe you will rebirth my soul, come back and restore me
Perhaps you will save me from my misery, my lost dreams
Perhaps you will do nothing but sleep in torment because of my betrayal
If so, maybe the dream will beat someday in another
Perhaps once again, with you in my heart, I will fly above the clouds,
With you in my soul, I will touch the rainbows
With you ever in my thoughts, we will be inseparable
Lost to all reality, we will sail ever onwards,
About the poem: This poem was inspired by a horse that I once owned and
sold because she couldn't take me to my dreams. She was fast around a
barrel, but not fast enough to compete in college rodeo and beyond to
higher stakes. She died shortly after I sold her. I have deeply
regretted giving her up since.
