'The Evil Twin'
The girl stared at the bleak sky over the dark school, it seemed
foreboding to her, strange and unwanted. She stood by the car staring in a
horrified fascination as several groups of people, laughing and bustling
each other so as not to be late, walked into the gaping mouth that was the
door. "Hurry up dear or you'll be late." Her mother called to her.
She shut the door and her mother pulled away, leaving her to walk into
the school, alone. She stepped in, out of the chilly morning that had
turned her cheeks and nose a rosy red. There were doors closed, on both
sides of the hallway, against the chill that ran through the hallway. The
girl walked forward in determination, and went through a door marked
'office'. She moved towards the desk where the secretary sat, head down,
typing madly at her keyboard. "Excuse me?" She said quietly to the woman at
the desk.
"You must be Megan, dear." The woman said, barely glancing at her,
"Your schedule is." She began to file through the papers on her desk and
brought out a solitary sheet from the bottom, "Here you go."
She handed the paper to Megan, who in turn, stared at it blankly for a
few moments before heading out into the corridor, her footfalls echoed back
to her darkly. Several minutes later she realized that she had somehow
circled back to one of the halls in which she had passed through earlier.
"I'm hopeless." She muttered as the bell rang.
Suddenly students were in the halls, shoving their way through other
people to get to their first classes, "Excuse me!" Megan shouted above the
noise, though her voice was lost among the rush of the others, "Can
somebody help me?"
There was a tap on her shoulder and she jumped, "Sorry. didn't mean to
scare you." A soft male voice said, "Are you new?"
"Yes, actually, I am," Megan said, "Can you help me out?"
"Sure. just let me see your schedule," He replied.
Megan turned to hand it to him, the boy had soft green eyes and a
slightly rounded face, "Okay. you have math first, and so do I, so let's
go!"
He grabbed her hand and began to drag her against the current of
people going in the other direction, "Hey!" Megan called, "Slow down!"
He pulled her into a classroom and walked over to an elderly woman who
was writing on the board, "Mrs. G?" He said softly, "We have a new student
in our class."
The woman stopped writing and turned, "I suppose that you are Megan?"
She said her voice showing some anger, Megan lowered her eyes.
"I am." She said.
"Just take a seat so that class can begin."
The boy pulled her to two seats in the back, "I'm Adam by the way.
don't mind Mrs. G. she's always mean to the new students."
Megan took notes studiously until lunch, she found a table in the back
of the cafeteria and opened her lunchbox, "That looks good." Said a voice,
making her jump, "I seem to keep having that effect on you today." Adam
said laughingly setting his tray down opposite of Megan's.
Megan stared at the lump of mystery meat in the center of his tray,
"That-" She said pointing at his tray, "is precisely why I prefer to make
my own food."
Adam looked at her with mock sadness, "My parents don't allow me to
pack myself a lunch."
Megan's hand stopped, sandwich halfway to her mouth, she sighed and
ripped it in half, giving a part to Adam, she pulled out two brownies and
gave him one as well before polishing off the rest of her lunch. The bell
rang and Adam led her to her next class. Several hours later, the school
day ended and Megan began her walk home. Adam caught up to her and began to
whistle as he walked. She stopped so suddenly that he ran into her, Adam
walked around Megan and stooped down before standing again and bringing the
back of his heal down on the injured bird that laid there. Megan gasped,
"Why did you do that!" She cried furiously.
"It was leaking brain fluid, Megan; it would have been cruel to let it
suffer." Adam said.
Angrily Megan put on a set of headphones and blasted heavy metal, she
turned into her driveway, Adam was saying something, "What?" Megan asked,
pulling back the headphones.
"I said see you tomorrow." Adam said, running down the road and to his
own house.
Megan went inside, shut the door, and sighed, so ended her first
hectic day in a new school. she loved it already.
The End!
