Waking up in the hospital drained Jessie of everything she had. She was shivering, and sweating all at the same time and the world continued to spin around in circles every time she opened her eyes. She clutched the edge of the bed, covered in crisp white sheets tightly and balled her hands into fists. She tried opening her eyes again, more slowly this time, and she took in her surroundings. The room was very plain, not so much as a picture on he wall. There was a chair beside the bed, and a bunch of machines beeping on her other side. There was a person in the chair beside the bed. Small, blonde, and curled in a ball. Jessie tried to be silent so she wouldn't wake him but she couldn't supress a groan deep in her throat. He opened his eyes wearily and when he realized hers were open he jumped up and put his hands on her fist. "Are you awake?" he asked, hopefully.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice cracking, "or I'm getting there anyway." He smiled, but it didn't seem to hold much humor.
"I'm glad you're awake. We were afraid...well..."
"What happened? What was wrong with me? How long have I been asleep?" Jessie's torrent of questions stopped only when she saw the bewildered look on David's face.
"You got all feverish and dizzy and we called an ambulance. You've been asleep for 2 days." he answered carefully.
"What's wrong?" she asked, noting that he had avoided that question.
"I...you...you had a miscarriage from shock." he answered, pain was obviously in his eyes. Jessie did not expect to feel so much pain. Why would she want someone so evil as Terrence's child? She didn't need a kid. She was much too young, but she felt the emotional pain all the same. She sucked in a deep breath and tried her best not to cry. Crying always upset David so much. Then she realized, maybe David didn't want to marry her anymore. Maybe David was only doing it because she was going to have a baby? She couldn't help it and she became to cry. David's face showed so much pain now that it just made it worse. He leaned down and pressed his lips against her hand so forcefully, but gently at the same time that she stopped crying and looked at him, finally reaching out her other hand and brushing some hair out of his eyes. He looked up, the brown of his eyes soft. She beckoned for him to crawl up onto the bed and he gingerly positioned himself so he wouldn't hurt her. She hadn't realized until then that she was actually in a immense physical pain. She did her best not to wince so he wouldn't think he had hurt her. The two lay there together wordlessly, holding each other for a long time.
The second time she woke up she still wasn't sure where she was. This time the phsyical pain was sharp and biting and she winced out loud. David moved slightly against her body and pressed his head into the hollow of her neck. She smiled in spite of the pain, because the warmth of being so close to him was almost blinding. There was another presence in the room, it was Max. He reminded her of a feral creature, crouching in the corner in the shadows. She tried to clear her throat so she could speak and he immediatley moved out from the shadows, to pour her a glass of water. She took a sip gratefully and when she looked up to thank him she realized that he'd been crying. "Max" she whispered. He turned around so she couldn't see his face and she reached out and touched his arm. He turned back around.
"Max...whats wrong?" she asked gently, trying her best not to wake David.
"Nothing is wrong." he answered too quickly.
"What is wrong?" she asked more forcefully.
"You're both leaving me." He answered, seeming like he wanted to kick himself for saying it, and sounding like a child at the same time.
"We're not leaving you, we both still love you." she answered, calmly, sympathetically.
"I don't want to be alone anymore Jessie. I'm losing everyone I love. Mom, then you and David all at the same time." he slumped into the chair and put his head in his hands.
"I love you Max. I love you so much. I know someone who might love you even more than I love you, is David." she whispered, he didn't budge. "But you're blind if you can't see that you'll never be alone." she murmured.
"I know you won't stop loving me and yada yada yada..."
"That's not what I'm talking about," Jessie cut him off, "Sunshine is so obviously in love with you. Why can't you see it? She's been in love with you for so long." He looked up for a moment, catching Jessie's eyes.
