Ideas ante res

In the unseen,
I kneel by your bed,
take your hand,
and lightly my lips
touch a blessing upon it.

In the unseen,
my heart stands in awe
of your soul’s fragile beauty.
Deep within, my spirit aches
with the wish to never hurt you.

In the unseen,
a silent tear
kisses your hand
as I ask your forgiveness
for all my imperfections.

And I pray for you,
there and then
I pray for you,
with Love by my side to listen,
with Love by my side to act.

In the unseen,
I lay His cloak around your shoulders,
His crimson cloak of love for you,
His cloak of velvety feathery lightness,
His cloak of secure protection.

In the unseen,
as you start into your day,
in the unseen,
He goes with you,
in the unseen
that is more real
than the visible.

The Latin title means “ideas before concrete things”. It was a catchword of early medieval scholasticism from the 2nd to the 12th century, when philosophy/ theology was strongly influenced by Platonism and people firmly believed that “universalia sunt realia”, “the unseen things are reality”, more so than what we see. I am neither a Platonist nor an adherent of medieval scholasticism, but I have always been intrigued by the thought that the spiritual dimension, though unseen, is a stronger reality than the visible world around us. I often wish I could believe that firmly, and at the bottom of my heart perhaps I do.
