Long Days Cold Nights- Prolouge
Life, what is it but an elaborate play? It’s never been rehearsed never planned, but it’s a play none the less. It has an opening scene, which marks the beginning, a plot line that you’re never quite fully aware of, and a wonderful or tragic ending. This is the beginning of one such play, new life brought into the world of love, hate, and many other things.
A cry is heard, and is soon joined by others. Small bundles of fur, pawing at the air in search of comfort and food.
“There there little ones,” A soft voice reassures, the muzzle of a silver wolf nudges a few of the new pups, allowing them to come closer and drink their fill. “Drink up my darlings...” The voice spoke again.
The lighting is dim in the underground den, but the brilliant green of the mother’s shimmering eyes is seen all the same. She looked over her pups, taking in every feature about each one of the four. Their fur color, body build, whether they were neat or scruffy, their eye color...everything. A few minutes passed by and they had drunk as much as they pleased. Two of the pups started playing right away, odd for newborns...true, but it didn’t matter. Silver, the mother, watched the two go at it and smiled softly. The playful ones seemed to be twins, both the same light brown color with the same dark green eyes as their mother.
Silver nuzzled the girl of the two, “Saru,” She stated softly, giving the female a name. She turned to the playful boy, smiling as he went after his sister once more, “And you shall be Niaz.” She felt a small warm ball by her side, and looked down to see the second female of the litter curled up and ready to fall asleep, this one was a darker brown, with the deep hazel eyes of her father. Silver smiled once more, giving the girl a gentle lick. “Yume will be your name.” She stated, smiling as the little pup drifted off into the world of dreamers.
Turning once more, the mother looked to the last of the litter. She tilted her head slightly, the last one to name was the runt, she could tell by the size of him. The pup’s coat was much like his mother’s, but with a gray tint mixed with the silver. His eyes were a wonderful icy blue; she smiled slightly as the small male tilted his head under his mother’s gaze. “Aren’t you the peculiar one...” She said softly, giving the pup a small lick on the forehead, “You aren’t playing or taking a nap, just perfectly content to sit there quietly.” She smiled at the silver-gray male.
Silver studied the pup, playing names through her mind...but none seemed to fit. He was such a peculiar runt, usually it was the runt of the litter that slept first...but he seemed wide awake. Silver glanced up to the entrance for a moment, then looked back to the pup, “...Chris.” She tried the name out; not quite sure what made her think of such a...odd name. But perhaps it was the pup’s nature to be different; she watched as Chris came over and lay between his mother’s front paws. She smiled down to the runt as he rested his head on her leg, giving him another lick on the head.
But Chris didn’t fall asleep as Silver had expected him to; he simply watched Saru and Niaz play together. Every so often he would turn his gaze to Yume and up to his mother...seeming to watch each wolf in the den in turn. It wasn’t until after both Saru and Niaz had fallen asleep that little Chris followed suit.
Not long after the pups had fallen asleep, the father of the litter came down into the den. Silver turned her gaze up to her mate and smiled warmly, “Amoraque how was the hunting?”
The light from the den entrance played along the alpha male’s fur, revealing the deep earth brown of the coat. Amoraque’s hazel eyes scanned over the four pups before turning to meet the emerald green of his mate’s eyes. “Decent” He said curtly, inclining his head towards the litter, “Have you named them?”
Silver nodded softly, motioning with her eyes towards the twins, “Those two are Saru and Niaz,” Motioning towards the dreamer, “Yume,” And then down to the odd one out, “Chris” she finished.
Amoraque had simply nodded as she said each name, but as the last one was told he focused his gaze on Chris, eyes sharp. The alpha then looked towards his mate, “Why a human name?” He demanded.
Silver looked a bit uneasy as he shot the question, her ears going back for a brief moment, “Amoraque...I didn’t realize...” She stopped then and looked towards her mate, “It’s only a name. I certainly hope you will not treat the pup any differently because of it.” Her voice was stern now.
Amoraque narrowed his eyes lightly, looking down to Chris and sighing briefly. “No...” he said gruffly, there was something in his voice that made it eminent that he wasn’t being completely truthful. The alpha turned, stopping and looking back to Silver as he finished his statement, “...I certainly hope not.”
