Chapter II
Hidden Veils, Hidden Choices
The soft pattering of the eternal rain echoed off the stain glass windows that lined the hallway. Shi’s claws clicked as he walked along the cold stone floor. He turned a red-eyed glance to the many statues that stood along the Grand hallway of the Underworld Cathedral posed in fighting stances with their weapons drawn. Their expressions of determination were illuminated by the candles that hung from chandeliers. A huff escaped the draconic reaper as he turned his gaze away from the statues to the end of the hallway. Shi never liked coming to the headquarter of the Soul Reaper Council; feel of pride and honor of being the ones to rid the world of sins was always on the minds of other Reapers, but for Shi, a Soul Reaper was nothing more then a ‘immortal janitor’ for the human’s waste. He stopped, and pulled his hood off, his dragon head exposed to the cold air of the hallway.
A strike of lighting caught his attention for a moment causing his ears to twitch from the sound of thunder that echoed off the walls. It had been almost ten years since he had last been in these halls, and still the weather remained unchanged. It made him wonder why he had been summoned. What did the councilor want to see him about? A he pondered this, his thoughts soon drifted to the incident in the previous night. When his blades rested on the neck of the woman he encountered. The woman that saw his face, he could have just finished the job, and leave before the city guards arrived, but what would be the point to taking her life all because of a rule that no mortal can look upon a Soul Reaper’s face; besides no one would believe her anyway.
“So it seems the all mighty Soul Reaper Shi makes his way to these hallowed halls once in a while.” A sarcastic voice said causing Shi to look over his shoulders in time to see a red-scaled dragon come out of the shadows. The short sleeved black cloak, and embroiled razor symbols were all too familiar to him.
“What do you want Seifer?” Shi spat. His eyes narrowed in suspicion.
A devilish grin came across the red-scaled dragon, as he folded his arms.
“Nothing in particular, just wanted to see you before you meet your end.”
“Meet my end?” Shi said with a raised eyebrow.
A chuckle escaped the apprentice reaper. “So you don’t even know why you’re here? How very amusing...”
“I guess being Counselor Victor’s dog has some advantages.”
“Counselor Victor sees potential in me…” Seifer growled.
“Potential?” A smirk came over the dark dragon, “More like a loyal mutt. Because that’s all you are and always will be, hatchling.”
Seifer’s eyes tensed venomously his voice tensed, “How dare you call me a hatchling…You are nothing Shi. Nothing!” A swirl of dark mist formed around the hands of Seifer causing a set of swords to appear. Their curved blade shimmered demonically with their emerald-colored blades. A true menacing sight, but Shi calmly turned around and faced the young apprentice. “Do you really want to go down this path, hatchling?” he warned, “I will not be easy on you.”
“Silence!” Seifer trusted his swords forward, but Shi side stepped the assault feeling the blade run past his arm.
Seifer spun back quickly, twisting his swords in hand, and made another strike towards his opponent, but soon dark mist formed around Shi’s hands, and his twin katanas parried the attack. The two locked in a hold with both blades pressing hard towards the other.
Seifer snarled, backing off from the hold, he charged Shi once again with more slashes and strikes. Shi evaded the predictable assaults; he knew Seifer was allowing his anger to control him. Such a thing was a terrible weakness, and Shi was counting on this.
“I’m disappointed, Seifer. Your attacks are easy to predict, and your focus is lacking, but then again, what could you possibly teach a lowly dog?”
Seifer’s emerald eyes lit with rage, “You’ll pay for calling me that!”
The red dragon lifted his blades over his shoulders moving in for a heavy strike. Shi smirked; Seifer had walked right into his trap. The black dragon parried the attack, but suddenly kicked Seifer’s left leg causing his opponent to stumble the ground. Before Seifer could react he felt a cold blade rest against his neck. He turned his eyes towards Shi, who’s right katana was pressed against the young one’s neck. He stared at the dark dragon with a glare filled with hatred.
Shi didn’t say a word, he wondered if it was better to just end Seifer’s life here. Sure it would not look good that a veteran reaper slew an apprentice of a counselor, but then again Shi would be ridding the Soul Reaper Counsel of a rotten being.
However, before he could make that decision, a large portal opened up behind the two.
“That’s enough.” A deep voiced boomed causing Shi to glance over his shoulder towards the portal in time to see the large figure of Prime appear. His large leathery wings outstretched, a sign of his true leadership in the Soul Reapers, and his dull crimson eyes that stared into Shi’s.
Shi moved one of his kanatas away from Seifer’s neck, not taking his eyes off Prime, and allowed the red-dragon to stand. Seifer didn’t look into the eyes of Prime, it wasn’t his place to as an apprentice, but he glared at Shi one final time before lowering his eyes reluctantly.
“Not at anytime, will I, ever, have fighting in these hallways.” Prime said sternly as he circled the two. Seifer kept his eyes down, but Shi continued to keep his focused on the leader of the Soul Reapers in the eyes.
“Seifer, you will respect elder reapers at all times or you will be punished regardless if you are the apprentice of a Counselor.” The aged dragon said.
Seifer cringed for a moment; it was one of the rare instances that Seifer showed fear, and as Shi watched, he could see a sliver of sweat form along the young dragon’s neck causing him self to smirk a little. However, Prime’s sights turned to Shi. He lowered his eyes since he was a head taller then Shi, and his broad framed body gave off an ominous aura. “As for you Soul Reaper Shi,” his dull crimson eyes glowed slightly unveiling the few wrinkles that were around his eyes, but beside that time hasn’t touched him in the thirty years he had been Head of the Council. “I will not have you mock or taunt the younger trainees for your own amusement, understand?”
“Hmph, of course,” Shi paused for a moment. “My Lord,” He added as an afterthought, his katanas disappearing into his shadow, “I was merely teaching where his place was.”
“There are enough reapers to already do that…” Prime trailed off turning his gaze to Seifer; who still had his head bowed down.
“Seifer you are dismissed.”
“Yes sir.” He replied standing up and walking away from the two, but Shi caught Seifer glancing back at him over his shoulder. His emerald eyes fixed on the dark dragon with hatred riddled in them, and his three-fingered hand clenched. Shi smirked once more as he watched Seifer turn the corner and vanish from view.
“Come with me.” Prime spoke, his tone was somber, which caused Shi to raise his brow as they walked along the hallway of statues. Shi followed the large draconic behind slightly; whose grey colored skin almost matched the stonework of the hallway.
“I wanted to speak with you before you are called into the counsel chamber.” He continued, “Just answer my questions.”
A sigh left Shi in annoyance, but he kept it soft so Prime could not hear. “Yes…my lord.”
Prime stopped in his steps and glanced over to Shi, “How many souls have you taken in the last year?”
“Six-hundred.”
Prime’s brow rose. “Six-hundred? Hmm…” Prime turned his gaze away from Shi for a moment. His arms folded in thought. Shi watched the old reaper, and wondered what exactly the whole point of the question was.
“That’s lower then your last year’s count.”
“Hmph…the population in my area is low because of another human war.”
“…Sounds more like excuses for skills that are diminishing.”
A growl formed in Shi’s throat, and this time he didn’t hide it. “It is fact, my lord.” His eyes meeting into the dull ones of Prime for a moment as he continued, “Now I have something to ask you. Other then to insult my skills as a reaper, why did you summon me?”
An uneasy silence followed Shi’s words as the two black dragons stared each other down. Prime’s large wings flaring up a bit, a sign of his bottled anger, but instead of releasing it, a smirk appeared on his draconic face. “You have guts to speak to me like that young one. If it was any other Soul Reaper…they wouldn’t be standing.” Shi ignored his words and plowed on angrily. “Just tell me why I was summoned… father.”
Prime coldly stared down Shi his dull crimson eyes scanning him up to decide what he should do next. His leathery wings flicked slightly on his body, but before speaking he turned around showing his back to Shi and gazing out the window. “I summoned you because the Soul Reaper council has a problem that only be answered by the Soul Reaper in charge of the Yata-area.” He somberly continued. “Even as Head-Councilor I cannot tell you what we will ask you in the main chambers.”
Shi folded his arms. “How bad is this problem?” he questioned.
Prime glanced over his shoulder for a moment before resuming his gaze back to the window. “Enough to warrant your execution if the council feels it’s necessary.”
“Hmph…so it’s that bad huh.” Shi continued dryly. “But I doubt you would stop them even if the council was to decide that, would you?”
Prime turned around suddenly, his leathery wings outstretched from his broad, cloaked, frame.
”The council will convene in an hour. I expect you to be ready for it by then.” The elder dragon walked past Shi, but stopped in his steps for a moment. “Furthermore…Son…” he paused. “You will not address me as your father in these halls again. Understand?”
Shi didn’t respond initially, and sighed to himself. “Understood…Lord Prime.”
Prime raised his hand, causing a dark portal to appear in front of him. He walked through the portal, vanishing from Shi’s sight leaving the Soul Reaper alone in the Grand hallway with only the sound of the endless rain keeping him company. Shi flicked one of his draconic ears as he thought to himself. What kind of problem would cause the council to even consider executing him? Did something happen in his area he wasn’t aware of? This troubled Shi as he stared out into the rain watching the dark clouds to seemly grow darker.
“Well…I suppose there is only one way to find out.” Shi spoke as he turned down the hallway making his way to the Main chambers. It didn’t please him that something happened in his area under his watch, but nevertheless he was bound to find the truth wherever or whoever it brought to.
Darkness, emptiness, that’s all that surrounded her as Sophia opened her eyes. She rubbed her eyes as she sat up, and her eyes went wide as she noticed there was nothing. No sky or even ground for that matter. All there seem to be was just a single beam of soft light that illuminated her area. “Where…am I?” she questioned as shakily stood up, a slight dizziness plaguing her head.
She couldn’t hear anything in the void, not a sound or even the hint of a breeze. “Did…I die?” she wondered, her heart quickening as fear crept over her. Maybe she wasn’t spared like she had thought. Maybe the Reaper had cut her down, and she was now in purgatory oblivion.
”No…” a voice spoke.
”Huh…No what?” she nervously answered, her eyes cautiously gazing around her. However, the voice didn’t seem to be one that she heard, but rather it felt like it just entered her mind.
”You are not dead…” the silent voice spoke once more, startling her.
”Who…who are you?”
”Trust the dragon of darkness…” the voice continued as images flashed around Sophia. It was hard to see it, but she made out a church falling down. It’s stone work falling to pieces from an unseen force. The image suddenly changed to a view of someone stumbling to the ground wrapped in a black cloak. She tried to look closer, to see if she could make anything else out, but the image vanished before she could.
”What dragon? Who are you…” she stopped as she thought back to the alleyway, and remembered the face of the Soul Reaper. “Are you talking about the Soul Reaper? Is the reaper the dragon of darkness?”
”Trust the Dragon of Darkness…”
”Why? Why do I trust him? What’s going to happen?” Sophia questioned the voice. However, only silence followed her words. She was about to call out again, when the beam of light over her intensified. She could barely see as the light grew in strength to the point she could no longer see the light, but before everything vanished the voice ringed in her head.
”The dragon will lead you to the past…”
“Sophia, wake up. Please wake up.” A familiar voice called.
As Sophia opened her eyes, she could tell that she was somewhere unfamiliar. A lamp above shined its’ light into her eyes causing her to squint and look to her bed side to find Karin’s familiar yellow eyes.
”Oh…” she weakly spoke, “Hi Karin.”
Karin’s large hand stroked the top of Sophia’s head gently. ”Thank god your awake, you had me so worried.”
“Sorry sis…” she groaned as she sat up.
”Wow, don’t get up so quickly. You took a nasty hit to the head.”
Sophia touched the side of her head and sure enough felt a tightly wrapped bandage along her left side. It felt like it was just above her ear “Ow.” She winched from the stinging pain that echoed from her touch of the bandage, and felt Karin push her hair aside.
“Careful, the doc said that has to stay on for it to heal properly. Now do you need anything?”
In her heart Sophia knew that Karin was more troubled then she let on. The way her sister’s yellows watered slightly, and how quickly she wanted to do something to get her mind off it.
”I’m a little thirsty.”
“Okay, I’ll get you a glass of water.”
As Karin stood up from her chair and went into the bathroom that was located just at the end of the room. Sophia glanced to the window to see the bright sunlight that gleamed into the windows illuminating the white walls of the room. She figured out she must have been at the General hospital as the machines next to her hummed as they showed her vitals with a beep for every pulse, and the IV bag dropped it’s fluids into the tubes that were attached to the back of her left hand. She hated hospitals, but she felt too weak to object.
”Here you are.” Karin spoke as she offered the cold glass of water to her.
”Thanks.” She carefully tilted the glass and sipped the cold water. She didn’t realize how thirsty she really was and savored it. She only had half of it before she tilted it back, and Karin took it from her hands to place on the tray beside her. A moment of silence passed as she watched her sister sit back down in her chair. Her large paws fidgeting and her yellow eyes watered slightly.
”Karin, are you okay?” she asked.
”Oh, I’m fine…” However, a tear flowed down her left cheek causing the Kitrin to quickly wipe it away with her paw. “I’m just glad you’re alright that’s all.” She paused as she took a tissue from the box that was on the tray, and lightly wiped the tears from her eyes. “I was just so worried when the police came into the bar, and told us all that three soldiers were found murdered and you were unconscious near the street.”
Sophia winched as she remembered the soldiers grabbing her, the knife close to her shirt, and finally the image of the Soul Reaper placing his blade along her neck. She touched it briefly, and winched.
”Sophia?”
The images faded away as sudden as they appeared and now she could only see her sister and the white room. Her hands trembled, and tears escaped her eyes.
”Are you alright? You’re trembling.” Karin said coming close to Sophia placing her paws onto her hand and shoulder.
”They tried to rape me…” she stuttered as her sobs increased. Karin’s eyes widen and pulled herself into Sophia who in turn hugged her Kitrin sister with want as she continued to tremble. “They were killed by a Soul….Reaper. That’s what one of them called him…He saved me, but…” Her words fell into a sea of sobs and tears as she cried into Karin’s arms.
”Shhh…” Her sister said as she stroked her large paw over Sophia’s head. “You’re alright now. I won’t let anyone harm you.”
Despite Karin’s soothing words, Sophia continued to tremble and sob as she tried to regain her senses. The flashes of the black dragon echoed through her mind. The katanas slashing into the men, the cold feeling of his katanas on her neck, but her mind seemed to stop as she envisioned those crimson eyes that looked down on her.
Suddenly, a knock on the door interrupted her thoughts and caused her to back from her sister’s embrace.
”Who is it?” Karin asked as she handed the tissue box to Sophia so to wipe her eyes.
”Hey, it’s me.” Matza said through the door, “Is it alright if I come in?”
“Hold on a sec Matza, Sophia just has to clean up.”
”No I’m okay. Come in.” Sophia interrupted.
Matza slowly opened the door, and walked in with a bouquet of white flowers in his hands. “Thought these might help.”
”Thanks, Matza. These look great.” Karin exclaimed as she took the flowers from Matza’s hands and allowed Sophia to see them. The sweet aroma of the lilies filled the room.
”Yeah, they’re very beautiful.”
“I’ll just put them in a vase.”
Matza took a chair close to Sophia’s bed and clasped his hands. “So how are you feeling?”
”I’m alright. A little sore, and dizzy, but I’m okay…” she replied as she rubbed her red eyes of the dry tears.
”Well, that’s great to hear. I know I was really worried when the medics carried you off.”
”Matza, is the one that called the cops when he heard the screams from the back.” Karin added.
Matza nodded slightly, and continued, “I tried to get to the back alley through the back way, but the door was jammed from the outside. I’m sorry I didn’t try harder to get in there.”
”It’s okay…” Sophia barely muttered, “You did your best…”
”Yeah, Matza, you got the cops to get back there, and who knows what would have happened if they hadn’t.” Karin said.
“But that’s the weird thing.” The young man said, rubbing his neck, “The cops were there first, but then the military took it over quickly. Whatever happened to those guys, it’s got them railed up.”
Suddenly the sound of a slamming door echoed from the hallway of the hospital causing the group to jump.
”Sir, you can’t go in there. Sir!” A nurse shouted as footsteps could be heard nearing the room. The door opened up, and a group of men appeared. Sophia instantly recognized that they were all wearing the same uniform that the soldiers last night wore. They moved into a room swiftly posing themselves around Matza and Karin.
”What’s going on here? Who are you?” Karin demanded, but none of them responded as they swiftly grabbed her and Matza’s hand holding them still. They tried to struggle, but their grip on them was firm.
Sophia’s eyes soon fell onto another man that came into the door. He wore the same uniform as the others, but instead was decorated with gold medals, and ribbons. His hat shadowed his eyes, but not his black beard that lined his jaw line. The large Star on the brim of his hat gleamed from the lights in the room as he took it off his head unveiling his stern expression. His auburn eyes cast down to Sophia as though she was a mouse in front of his boot.
”You are the woman that was with my men.” He said deeply as he stood over Sophia’s bed with intimidation.
Sophia didn’t answer as her shoulders trembled in the wake of his gaze. She wanted to get out of her bed, but her legs didn’t move as she stared up at the man with frightened eyes.
”Hmm don’t have a voice huh?”
”Who are you!”
The large man’s gaze shifted to Karin, and placed a hand on his holster where his pistol hanged. “General Braken, half-breed, of the 12th Infantry of Yukotia.” He turned his attention back to Sophia, and narrowed his eyes. “Now, young lady. Tell me who killed my men.”
Sophia still didn’t answer as she tried to think. The images of the men dieing, and screams were still vivid. Her eyes started to water once again.
”Answer me woman.” Braken said sternly, unmoved by the tears. “Tell me, who killed my men. Was it you and a band of Romanov agents?!”
”Stop it!” Matza shouted, “She didn’t do anything.”
”Tell me wench, how did you kill my men!”
”Leave my sister alone!” Karin growled as she used her tail to grab her captures ankle and pull him down. She raised her clawed paws, and posed to lunge at the General when he suddenly pulled a gun to her head.
The room went silent as Karin froze with the cold metal barrel pointed at her forehead. Braken could only smirk slightly as he cocked the pistol with his thumb. “You half-breeds were always a nuisance. Just a waste of resources.”
”No you can’t do this!” Matza shouted as he struggled.
Braken could only smile as he moved his finger to the trigger and prepared his shot.
”Stop!” Sophia shouted as tears flowed down her cheeks. “I’ll talk. I’ll tell you what happened. Just don’t hurt my sister. Please…”
“Good.” He holstered his pistol and pointed a finger to another of his men to hold Karin, who stared at the General with a hateful glare.
Sophia’s throat felt dry as she tried to put her words together. “While I…was with the men, a man or dragon appeared in a dark cloak. He…had two swords, and attacked them.” Sophia paused, “But they couldn’t stop him. He slaughtered them all…”
”Two swords?” One of the solder’s whispered to the other.
”Black cloak? Do you think it’s a…”
Braken glared to the soldiers, which silent them, and turned his head back to Sophia as she continued.
”He had red eyes…they glowed so brightly, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Her hands started to tremble as she remembered his gaze onto her, and how the men burned into a blue flame. “He burnt them up with his swords as they screamed…They didn’t have a chance…”
“It was a Soul Reaper…” The soldier that held Karin squeezed out. Braken huffed, and narrowed his eyes to his men and finally to Sophia.
”So one draconic took out three of my men, and incinerated them with his swords. Is that what you’re saying?”
Sophia nodded slightly, but suddenly the General grabbed the tray, and threw it to the ground causing the vase with the white flowers to smash and spill water along the floor; his face bearing down on Sophia. “Do you honestly think I will believe a story like that? That one draconic took down three of my men, and left you alive? Why were you spared?”
”I don’t know…” she whimpered.
“Soul Reapers are myth; a tale told to those of weak minds to keep them quiet and behaved.”
”But it’s true…I swear.”
”Sir, maybe she’s right.” A soldier spoke up.
”Silence! I will not believe made up stories by a Romanov agent. Admit it you lured my men to the back.”
”Stop it!” Karin shouted.
”You had a squad waiting there that gunned them down.”
’There was no one else there!” Matza yelled before being hit in the head by the butt of a rifle. “Agh!”
“Matza!”
”Just admit it, you are a Romanov spy!” Braken sneered as he gripped Sophia’s hand tightly.
”I’m telling the truth!” she cried as she looked over to Karin and Matza.
’Tell me what I want to hear or else the half-breed dies first.”
”I wouldn’t advise that General.” A young man spoke as he entered the room. “You would really want to tell your superiors that your men fell because of one little girl?” He brushed his uniform with his left gloved hand as he walked into the room; his calm hazel eyes roaming around the room meeting the attention of everyone.
”You’re from the Yata police force.” The general observed as he removed the pistol from Karin’s forehead, but still having it firmly grasped in his hand.
”Officer Kursa of the Y.P.F., yes.”
”Officer! Please stop him.” Karin yelled.
”This has nothing to do with you, officer, so kindly leave so I may work.” The general said tapping his gun on his forearm.
”I’m sorry to hear that General, but a murder committed in Yata falls on the police force when a citizen of the city is in the mix.” He paused as he made his way to Sophia’s bedside. ”How are you Miss? Are you feeling better?”
”Who do you think you are?” General barked, “These are my prisoners till I get my answers now bug off before I have you arrested.”
”General, general…if you arrested me then you would have to report the reason for my arrest. Then once you said I interfered with your interrogation then the High General would want to know who you are interrogating. And once you explain how you believe that three of your men under your command were all brutally slaughtered by a single woman, who you suspect to be a Romanov assassin or spy, which somehow managed to get pass your watch.” The young police officer paused, “I doubt the High General would look upon this performance as satisfactory by his standards; don’t you agree?”
The General didn’t respond as his eyes narrowed, and his forehead started to burn red.
”Unlike you General, I believe this was the work of a Soul Reaper.”
”Tch…that myth.” Braken snuffed.
”Myth or not, I imagine the High General would respect that your men were taken out by something not of this world rather then by a small young lady.”
”Sir, maybe he’s right.” One of the soldiers added.
”Be quiet!” The General shouted silencing the soldier quickly. However, Braken didn’t say another word as he stood silent. His eyes moving about the room in thought.
”Hmph…” He unlocked the pistol and placed it back into his holster. “Move out men. I have nothing further to deal with here.” The soldiers let go of Matza and Karin, making their way out of the room. Karin growled in her throat. She wanted to attack him, but out of the corner of her eye Matza held his hand up. She sighed reluctantly as the General approached the door, and turned to Kursa, and Sophia. “Break into another of my investigations Kursa, and you’ll be sent to an interment camp along with these pathetic ruffians.”
”Good day to you General and I wish you the best on the front lines.” Kursa said with a mocking salute that only caused the forehead of Braken to redden even more as he left the room.
A silence filled the room, and Sophia cling to herself as her pent up tears started to overflow her eyes and fall with a serious of sobs. She felt Karin’s arms wrapped around her, and she tightly embraced her.
”Shhhh sis….it’s okay.” Karin whispered.
”Hey, Officer thanks for the help.” Matza said.
”It’s nothing at all. It always seems to be like this whenever the military shows up for the Gathering.”
”And you can’t do anything to that bastard?!” Karin suddenly shouted, “He broke in here, and nearly killed us all.”
”I’m sorry Miss Soma; the military have higher priority then the police force. Only reason Braken backed off was because he didn’t want his pride to be harmed. If he finds anything else he’ll be back regardless what I do.”
”Well…thanks anyways.” Karin muttered as she stroked the head of Sophia.
”My men and I will continue to investigate this. For now try to stay out of trouble.”
”Will do.” Matza added.
As Kura was leaving the room, Sophia spoke. “Wait…”
”Hmm? Yes?” Kursa asked.
”Soul Reapers…” she started as she moved away from Karin’s embrace, “What are they?
A confused look appeared on the officer’s face, “Well…we’re not sure ourselves.” He started, “All we have is stacks of unsolved murder cases over the years. All of them with the same M.O.” He paused once more. “The murders, all taking place at either bars or alleyways, and the victims being incinerated quickly, but no signs of accelerates in the vicinity.”
”Has anyone…seen one?” Sophia asked.
”Well, yes and no.” Kursa answered. His hand sweeping along his hair as Sophia looked at him waiting. She had to know as much as she could.
”There have been many witness of the Reaper. From here to Romanov, but they are vastly different. Some will say he uses a sword, then the next he’ll be using a pistol. None can agree on the weapon that is used, and not even what species the Reaper is, but there is one common thing they all share…”
”A black cloak…” Sophia suddenly spoke.
”Sophia?” Karin said with a surprise.
”Yes…they all wore a black cloak that covered their body and face from anyone.”
The image of the Soul Reaper flashed into Sophia’s mind, his crimson eyes staring down at her before it flashed away from her mind.
”Come to think of it, you are the only one that has come close to a Reaper.” He said moving closer to Sophia. “Do you happen to remember anything about the Reaper’s face?” His eyes seemed to narrow as he awaited her answer causing Sophia to hesitate. For some odd reason she felt a cold chill come down her neck.
”Uhm..No.” Sophia quickly answered, “It…was too dark to see. I’m sorry…”
Kursa leaned back and his eyes now taking the kind characteristic. ”It’s alright, you had a rough night. I shouldn’t expect you to remember.”
Karin slowly stood up and moved next to Sophia, stroking her sister’s hair softly. “Thanks for your help again Officer Kursa, but I think my sister needs some rest.”
”Of course, my apologies for keeping you.” He placed his officer’s cap back onto his head and walked to the door. “If you three need anymore assistance, just let me know.”
”Yes…thank you.” Sophia replied. She watched Kursa leave the room, and allowed herself to rest onto her pillow. She soon felt her cover being pulled up onto her by Karin. She wanted to say something to her and Matza, but how could she? How could she make sense about the dream, and the Reaper? What did it all mean?
”Try to get some rest okay sis?” Karin said soothingly, ‘Matza and I will stay here for tonight, and tomorrow we can go home.”
”Okay…” she weakly replied as her eyes started to become heavy. She felt her sister’s paw on her forehead. Soothingly massaging her as sleep started to take her. For now all she could hope for was that her dreams would be dreamless.
