Morning on the Farm

Outside my window tonight

An owl calls in the moonlight

As the moon approaches the gray dawn

It shines upon a doe in the meadow with her fawn

Deep in the forest, up in the trees

A baby squirrel starts to squeak among the leaves

In a cave, not far away, a ball of fuzz

A baby bear eats honey while bees buzz

On the river bank, watching the sunrise

Are a mother raccoon and her son so small in size

By the field in a burrow lies a litter

Baby bunnies and their babysitter

In the house I lay awake

I listen quietly to a hissing snake

I hear the pattering of little mouse feet

He is looking for something good to eat

Mom is beside me, my siblings don’t care

The Masters are asleep up the stair

When I ask why I can’t go with Dad

She says “silly puppy, staying home’s not that bad”

I listen while the horses nicker

And watch the fire flicker

In the fireplace it crackles

There it laughs and cackles

Out in the pasture the cows moo

Up in the loft the doves coo

The bulls charge and bellow

The little calves are quiet and mellow

The sheep with lambs are large and plump

And the wolves sneak up without a thump

My father barks a simple warning

The wolves won’t eat sheep this morning!

Not when my father’s on the job!

Which happens to be the farm’s watchdog

The masters’ are so very proud

Of my wonderful father, Cloud
