Her hair hangs across her face
Like a heavy velvet curtain
Drawn closed to shut out the day.
Teardrops dance with quiet grace;
Down her cheeks they trail, uncertain,
And off her chin they fall away.

The man she loved as good as dead –
He gave his love to another.
She casts aside her wedding veil.
I love you and you alone, he’d said.
Her sobs she tries to smother,
But it is to no avail.

She lies there, wretched, all alone;
Her perfect dream was snatched away.
She’s naught to lose but less to gain,
Her heart is solemn, set in stone,
And there she’ll lie till her last day
Lest something – or someone – can ease her pain.
