A Silhouette of the Stars
She lay back,
Her happy, blond curls in the damp grass,
Her sad, blue eyes laughing at the sky.
The shooting star fell somewhere,
Leaving its trail of silver dust.
Her companion made a wish and laughed,
Pointing at the beautiful sight.
"Why do you laugh?" she asked.
"Why do you laugh at something so sad?
It's dead, you know. It died long ago.
Why would you laugh at a wandering spirit?
Why would you laugh at the last memory
Our own sun may one day leave?
We are that star," she told him.
"One day, we'll die and fade away.
Would you be laughing then?"
