Failsafe

By Emilee Petersmark

Be careful not to get yourself exposed--

The sun can burn with windows open wide.

Living is easy when your eyes are closed--

Only in your fugitive lies, confide.

Ambiguity can make you feel real.

Pretend you know, live metaphorically;

Take your hungry lonesomeness to conceal

Your life is death told allegorically.

Erect a tower, cold and unfeeling,

A fortress to keep you safe from yourself,

With no doors and a 10-inch-thick ceiling,

Nothing within but your heart on a shelf.

Keep your brain on your tongue and your face in the dark--

A silent bullet, unnoticed, missing its mark.
