Chapter V

Nothingness, that was all that lay around him. He sat alone, his eyes closed to the darkness that surrounded him. He felt the stinging of the cold air flow across his shoulders as he sat down in the center his arms draped over his powerful dragon legs. This was his place to be alone; this was his home for quite sometime.

“I see you’re still alone.” A voice said as he felt a warm touch come along his shoulder and arm causing Night to open his eyes to see what broke the silence of his world. For a moment the person appeared blurry to him, but slowly his eyes adjusted to see the all too familiar long black hair floating around her in an almost angelic aura. Her face became clear allowing him to see a soft smile across her face along with her rich and mysterious brown eyes. The white dress she wore seemed to be made of silk and looked almost like a wedding dress since it went down so far to cover up her legs. His eyes admired her smooth face something that he had loved to look at so long ago, but now turned his gaze back to the ground. “What do you want now?” he said in a quiet, but deep tone.

“Just to talk.” She said sitting beside him ignoring his tone of voice.

He could feel her long brown hair slowly touch parts of his red-black scaled arm causing him to look over at her to be surprised she was already looking back at him.

“I see you no longer have your glasses…” he said looking away once more.

“Yeah…they didn’t have much use in this realm. I’m glad you noticed.” She said with a smile.

Night only nodded slightly, he didn’t know how to reply to her; his clawed hands slowly moving up to his knees as he stared down at his bipedal legs staying silent.

“So…how is Raiden doing?” She said breaking the silence between the two.

“He’s fine.” He replied, “He misses you though…”

Elisa smiled, “I miss him too. I still remember trying to feed him the first time and how he would spit it out all over my hair.”

Night didn’t respond to her words. Instead he only stared ahead; just listening to her voice.

“Is he improving in the tournaments?” she asked once more.

“He’s progressing; he has won his last few matches.”

“I’m glad…that way Petrov can’t remove him.” She said her voice tainted with disgust as she remembered the Ender CEO.

Night huffed at the mention of Petrov’s name and turned a red eye to Elisa. Petrov can go to hell for all I care. Besides he knows he would have to go through me to be rid of Raidan.”

A soft smile formed once more along her the angelic face of Elisa as she slowly rested a hand on his scaled hand causing him to turn his draconic face to her his eyes peering through his belted leather mask.

I’m glad you watched over him after…the incident. I was worried what Petrov would do to him after my death.”

A look of anguish passed over Night, “I did what needed to be done…” he said pulling his hand away from hers.

“Why do you do this to yourself?”

“Do what?” he replied.

“Punish yourself, always making it seem like you committed a sin that even god could never forgive you for.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about…”

“Then care to explain why you crushed my photo?”

Night looked up at Elisa with a look of surprise then turned away. “I don’t care for you to spy on me either.”

“Most of the time I don’t look through your eyes, but I sensed you were thinking of me and then I saw you crush the photo of me. Ever since I was locked into your mind, all I see is you punishing yourself as if you want to die. In all the matches you enter you never give a sense for your own life. Even now where we can speak you push me away when at one time you asked me to marry you. Ryoko the accident wasn’t your fault-.”

Don’t ever say that name again.” Night said with a growl in his voice staring back at her with a grim glare along his face, “That name is dead to me. The man that once held that name disappeared long ago and will never return.”

Elisa frowned and looked down at her hands with a few tears coming down her face. “You may not want to hear this, but I never blamed you for it, and I wish you could go back to being the happy guy that I met and fell in love with.” She slowly moved close to the dark dragon and kissed his snout feeling the texture of his red and black scales along her lips. “But even now I still love you…”

Night turned away from her. “Please leave me alone Elisa…For once respect what I ask.”

She clasped her hands together feeling sadness cross her face as she stood up looking down at him with her watery brown eyes. “I’m sorry I bothered you…Good bye.” She said with a whisper as she disappeared into the darkness leaving NightDragon alone in silence with tears slowly flowing down his face; collecting in the belts of his mask.

The streets of Tokyo were alive tonight. With lights shining into the night sky, illumining the streets for the many people that flocked down the sidewalks to the large arena that stood in the middle of the former capital. Banners of the S.D.L hung along the walls, its familiar “S.D.L” letter over lapping one another embroiled in white along a blue silk background. As the people walked in, with tickets punched from the officers out front, their eyes would grow wide as they saw the open vastness of the arena making you wonder how the Tokyo Coliseum could be this big. The many seats seemed to flow down to the center oval that was in the middle of the great arena with its shining symbol of the S.D.L. gleaming from the light show that came from the teletron that hanged above the battle ground. Indeed this was all quiet a sight to Drake as he watched the people take their seats from a high up balcony; wearing a set of jeans, a shirt, and a baseball hat to try and cover up his dragon body. He winched a little from the constriction of his pants since it was barely big enough to cover up his dragon tail, which went down his right leg. It had taken him and Sarah quite a long time for them to get the pants on without it being too painful. He didn’t quite understand why he had to wear all this clothing and not just his old cloak, but Sarah had told it would have looked too odd for someone to be walking in the crowd with a full body cloak.

“Quite a sight isn’t it?” Riku said as he looked out to the crowd with Drake, “And tonight we’ll be entertaining them all.”

“Really?” Drake said with his usual child-like tone.

“Yup, I tell you Drake, I’ve been doing this for 10 years, and still coming to the arena before the actual fight begins warms the blood and eases the mind.” Riku said pulling out a cigarette from his pocket and lighting it.

“Sarah says smoking is bad.” Drake said pointing to the cigarette that now protruded out of the veteran fighter’s lips.

Riku smirked a little, “Sheesh she’s even trying to get you to make me quit.”

“What it is a bad habit and you should quit.” Sarah spoke as she came behind the two holding a datapad underneath her right arm; her glasses shining slightly from the lights of the arena.

“Meh being in this sport I doubt lung cancer will be my first problem.” Riku added tapping his cigarette between his fingers dropping the ashes into a small bin that was common to see around the arena for smokers like him. “So what are the matchups for today?” he said indicating to the datapad in her arm.

“Well it seems most of the corporations are attending this tournament minus a few that are going into bankruptcy and what not. But the major ones are all here.” She said holding out the datapad to him.

Riku took another buff , and took the datapad into his hand looking it over:

“Guess we fell quite a bit in the standings with that last lost to Ender…” Riku muttered, “At least we are facing an easy opponent.”

Drake looked over Riku’s shoulder noticing how the teams were split into the two groups of Low Rank and High Rank. “What do these mean?”

“Well kid, in the S.D.L all corporations are split into two groups based on their standings, which as you can see are the High Rank and the Low Rank. In all fairness High Rank teams cannot fight Low Rank teams. As I recall they did that back in the old days, but the High teams always trashed the lower ones. Anyways, the tournaments pit the Low Rank teams against one another as well as the High Rank teams. The winners of each group are usually given a cash prize of 100,000 Yen, and as I know the winner of the Low Rankers can issue a challenge to the 5th seeded team to a match regardless of the standings; kind of a way to steal points from the higher ups.”

Drake nodded his head as he read through the text understanding bit by bit of the tournament format.

“All I care about is getting enough points to challenge NightDragon.” Sarah said with a serious tone causing Riku to look up and put his cigarette out. “Sarah, you’re over 20 points from him in the fighter standings, you need to be 3 points from him to issue a solo challenge. Besides…you’ll just be killed.”

Sarah narrowed her eyes a bit and took the datapad from him with Drake looking on with worry. “Says you…I plan on issuing the challenge as soon as I am close to him.”

“Who’s NightDragon?” Drake asked causing the two NeoGen fighters to look at him with a grim look.

“NightDragon…is the fighter of Ender Corp. He currently leads the fighter standings in all categories. Not much is known about him only that he came into the S.D.L. four years ago and has dominated ever since.”

“He’s also the monster that murdered Jeff.” Sarah said as she pulled her glasses off her face.

“Sarah, you know as well as I do that he would beat you the same as any other. Don’t be so focused on revenge. We still have a ways to go till we can fight Ender, and right now we need to get Drake focused for his first match.”

Sarah stared at Riku for a moment hearing his all too familiar words that he use to say when he was caption of NeoGen two years ago, but as she could see even without the captaincy, he could still command a presence.

“You’re right.” She said looking over at Drake seeing the worried look he showed towards her. “Where should we place him then?”

Riku looked over at Drake for a moment, “Well Gigta is a pretty easy team so I say put him second after me. I can beat the first guy and Drake here can seal the deal for us.”

“Shouldn’t we put him in third, that way he might not have to fight?”

Riku looked over at Sarah, “He needs to get his feet wet sometime; best to do it against a weak opponent rather against the stronger ones later on in the tournament.”

“Drake…do you think you can handle it?” Sarah asked softly.

He looked at the two, and smiled at Sarah, his blue eyes showing nothing but innocence to the two. “Me ca can do it.”

Sarah chuckled, “It’s “I” Drake not “Me””

“Oh sorry…”

“Don’t worry your getting better at it.” Sarah said with a smile crossing her soft face; a difference from the stern one she had given just moments before.

Suddenly the lights grew dim in the arena, and a boom came from the many speakers that surrounded them making Drake winched from the pain in his heightened ears.

“It’s starting.” Riku said as another boom came from the speakers once more with a light show shining down on the crowd with the sound of music playing. Then finally, another boom followed with the voice of an announcer coming through the speakers.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the S.D.L. Tokyo Coliseum Tournament. Tonight, be amazed by the strength, the speed, and life that is…Shadow Drive!”

Another boom echoed from the speakers, and flashes of light burst along the arena floor. Drake watched with amazement at the colorsthat shined around the arena which caused the crowed to roar with excitement. Drake felt it as well, a lump in a chest that pounded with that same exhilaration. He felt a hand touch his shoulder, and turned his head to see Riku standing beside him. “Watch the matches closely Drake, and study your opponents. That will give you the edge you need to win.”

Drake could only nod as he turned his blue eyes back to the arena as they waited for the first match.

The roar of the crowd echoed along the walls of the locker room causing Anya to look up in surprise. She had been in many tournaments back in Russia, and had been nervous before matches, but this time she felt like throwing up. Here was her big change in the largest league in the world with the best team in the world. However, what would happen if she blew it…Mr. Petrov would no doubt send her back to Russia, and she couldn’t let that happen…

“Anya don’t cry.”

”I know papa I’m just nervous, and scared.”

“Ah, Anya don’t worry. Just do your best and the riches will come to you.”

“I won’t disappoint you Papa. I swear I will make you proud and be a champion.”

“You’ve already made me proud, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a champion or not. You’ll always be my little Anya.”

Anya pulled on the straps of her Razor Gloves tightly fastening them to her hands firmly looking at the sharp claws that were sewn into the fingertips. She moved her wrist a little seeing if they gave any restriction to the movement, but felt none and relaxed a little against the backboard of her bench. She glanced over to Raidan who sat beside her pulling on a set of opened finger gloves onto his talon like hands. She watched him carefully seeing his silver mane drape along his dragon like ears. It was very beautiful in a way; she had never seen silver hair on anyone before. The way the light it in made her think about the beautiful Northern Lights she often saw on winter nights back home.

“Is there something in my hair?” a soft voice sounded in her head causing her to be a little startled as Raidan looked over his shoulder back at her with his solid red eyes.

“Huh what?”

“You were staring at my hair for a while. Is there something in it?” The voice echoed again as Raidan ran his a clawed hand through his silver mane.

“Uh no just I…” she muttered with a blush crossing her face, “I couldn’t help, but notice your silver hair. It’s very nice.”

A smile crept onto the blind dragon’s face, “Thank you, it’s very nice of you to say that.”

Anya smiled as well, “Uh could I ask you something?”

Raidan turned around to face her, “Yes.”

“How did you know I was looking at you?”

Another smile crossed Raidan’s face, “I smelled your shampoo off your hair. It was closer to me then before.”

“Oh, I guess it’s really helpful to have a nose as strong as yours.”

Raidan only nodded as he reached down to strap the lower parts of his Ender uniform to his body. It made Anya wonder, how he could see where his feet were, but she didn’t bother to ask since the answer was probably more amazing then his sense of smell. As she continued to watch him dress, she noticed that he appeared to have no weapons of any kind around him.

“Raidan?”

“Yes?”

“Do you have a weapon to use in the arena?”

“Yes.” He voiced softly in an innocent like tone, and held up one of his draconic like hands to her; his talons gleaming in the fluorescent lights of the locker room.

Anya blinked in surprise, “Your hands are your weapon?” she asked.

“Uh-huh.” He voiced, “Night trained me hard to use my hands in matches.”

Anya nodded her head, and sat back against the wall hearing the crowd’s roar rise up in volume once again. She looked around the room, and finally noticed NightDragon, who was sitting near a locker at the far corner of the room. His head looking down to the ground as though he was deep in thought. He had been like that since she came into the room, and she wondered if something was bothering him, but she didn’t dare ask. However, maybe Raidan knew what was wrong. She could already tell that there was a strong bond between the two.

“Hey, Raidan…” she whispered, “Is their something wrong with NightDragon?’

The green dragon looked over in Night’s direction, for a moment and back to Anya. “Night has been thinking of a lot of things lately. I don’t ask him much…he doesn’t like it when people ask about his feelings…”

“Oh…” Anya replied as she relaxed against the wall once more and looked over Night wondering what was going through the dark dragon’s mind. Suddenly, a green light flashed above the doorway of the locker room causing Night to snap out of his look, and stand up looking at the other too with an emotionless expression. “Our match is up…Let’s go.”

The two stood up, and followed Night into the hallway. Anya could feel her heart starting to race; this was first match in the highly acclaimed S.D.L., and the beginning to fulfilling her promise. She took one last deep breath and made her way down the dark corridor.

“Winner is… Team Astex!!! What a surprise victory for the 12th seed of this tournament as Tensyua Namu manages to win his battle and break the tie between Team Astex and Team Estex. What a match!”

The announcer boomed through the speakers as the NeoGen team watched on from their balcony. “Good finishing move.” Riku said taking a smoke from his cigarette with Sarah standing beside him.

“I agree, those two companies maybe at the bottom of the barrel of rankings, but they always hate one another.” She added as she looked onto the datapad in her hand seeing all the stats of the two teams.

“Kind of comes with the territory when the two use to be one company. Before that split they were a great team to face, but now just lower dogs fighting among themselves.” He added tapping his cigarette into the tray beside him. Sarah looked up for a moment, and noticed that Drake had moved away slightly from them. He was leaning against the bars of the balcony staring down to the arena floor. She walked over to him noticing he didn’t seem to notice her at all.

“So Drake, did you enjoy the fight?” She asked, causing him to look away from the arena floor.

“It’s so…brutal.” He replied in his usual child like tone.

“Yes it is, but you have to focus remember? You have to fight hard to win.”

“I will Sarah…” he said softly as he looked down on the arena floor to watch the rest of the match. Sarah could only stand beside him wondering if Drake was really made for the arena. It had crossed her mind multiple times wondering if it was right to put him into the arena when he didn’t seem to have the spirit to fight. Then again what she saw in the training room not more then weeks before frightened her the most. She had tried to get the files on that training session, but they were all classified by Janus himself making her wonder what was the CEO of NeoGen planning for Drake.

“Well look who I run into; the beautiful and talented Sarah Hart.” A voice called out to her causing her to turn around and see Taiven smiling as he leant against the wall. “Now how long has it been since we last spoke?”

“Quite sometime Taiven, how are you?” she said with a smile.

The tattooed fighter smiled, “As well as any man could be my dear.” He said as he gently held her hand to kiss the back of it politely. “I am very sorry about the passing of Jeff. He was a good man.”

“Yes, thank you.” She replied noticing out of the corner of her eye that Drake had turned around to look at Taiven with an interest eye, something she had never seen him done before.

“Hey, Taiven.” Riku said walking up to the group.

“Oh hello Master, what things have brought upon an old fighter like you?”

Riku only smirked, “I never liked it when you called me Master when I was teaching you, and what is this about me being an old fighter? This old fighter can still kick your butt around the arena floor, but maybe this time we can finally have a tournament match since you have a quality fighter on your team now to compete against us properly.”

“Oh you know about that?” Taiven replied crossing his arms.

“What? Who’s your new team mate?” Sarah asked with puzzlement, and annoyance. She never liked it when Riku hid stuff from her.

“You know her pretty well Sarah. It’s Tiffiany Lask formerly of Ender Corp.”

Sarah’s eyes budged out for a moment, “You have HER!”

“Yup, the CEO managed to sign her away from Ender Corp.”

“Kind of odd since she was close to NightDragon apparently and suddenly decides to sign with Dak Corp.” Riku added, “Very odd.”

“Yeah, I’ve tried to get some info about it, but she is such an ice queen about everything.”

“Of course, she’s a low down Bitch!” Sarah shouted, but calmed down adjusting her glasses.

“Don’t worry Sarah, it just means you’ll have more chances to get back at her.” Riku said with a pat on the young woman’s shoulder.

Taiven glanced over Sarah’s shoulders to notice Drake was still staring at him, “And who is this?”

Sarah turned around, and noticed it as well. “Oh this is our newest member Drake.”

“Well now pleasure to meet you Drake.” He said holding out his hand to the disguised dragon. Drake only looked at the hand for a moment and sniffed before Sarah pulled him up. “Drake that’s rude, this is Taiven of Dak Corporation, and a good friend of me and Riku.”

“Oh sorrie.” Drake said before shaking the hand that was presented to him, and looked at the fancy markings that surrounded the young man’s face and hands.

Taiven chuckled at the quizzical look Drake gave, “I see you noticed my tattoo huh?”

“Yes…I’m sorry I being rude again.”

Taiven chuckled once more, “No worries, I know my tattoos are a bit unusual, but their nice. Well I should be going. My teams match will be starting after this one so I will bid you all ado.” He said with a wave as he exited the hallway.

“What a nice man.” Drake said a smile crossing his face.

“Yup, he’s always been carefree about being a shadow driver.” Riku said putting out the cigarette as he finished it up.

“Still can’t believe Tiffany is on his team…” Sarah muttered.

“I doubt he had a choice. Hayao Izturies is the boss at Dak Corp and makes the decisions down there, but I always wondered why Taiven always stayed with that company.”

“Did you ever ask him?” Sarah questioned.

“A few times he always said it was “personal reasons”.”

Suddenly a flash hit Drake causing him to hold his head. He saw images of an office with a desk, and a young man behind it holding out his hand to him.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Hayao Izturies.”

Another flash of images invaded his mind as he saw a gun drawn to his face and fired. His eyes open with a start, sweating pouring from his scales, as he looked to see Riku and Sarah staring back at him.

“Drake, are you alright?” Sarah said kneeling in front of him looking into his dark blue eyes.

“Me not sure…Izturies is familiar.” He said slowly.

“Do you remember something?” she asked, but before Drake could respond another boom came over the loud speakers.

“Ladies and Gentleman our first match of the High Rankers will be starting, but first let’s introduce the two teams…”

A gut-wrenching boom came from the speakers once again, but this time music played in the background. A mix of rock and roll streamed into the arena as the crowed cheered with anticipation.

“Let’s welcome the number six seed of the S.D.L. standings. Team Dienex!”

The announcer shouted through the speakers as a formula of dry ice and laser lights fell down on to the arena. Bright lights emitted around the arena floor, and dissipated within a few seconds as the members of Team Dienex walked from the hidden hallway into the middle of the circular arena waving their hands to the crowd their faces smiling.

Suddenly the lights dimmed once more, and the fog returned to surround the hallway that Dienex had entered.

“Now for the number one seed; the only undefeated team in the entire S.D.L.… Team Ender!” A flash of fireworks ignited the darkness, and the hallway light up with red lights and the Ender logo appearing onto the giant teletron. “First, let’s introduce the newest nember of Team Ender…from the prominent Russian League…Anastasia Metiov!”

A spotlight focused onto the entryway as the young Anya walked out, a shy look coming across her face as she brushed her short black hair slightly as she waved to the crowd; her red jacket shining from the lights.

“So that’s the new member.” Riku said as he watched Anastasia walk over to the lower bay bench where the rest of Ender Corp. would be in short order.

“I’ve never see her before.” Sarah added as she looked down.

“Not surprised, look how she’s acting, she’s definitely a rookie in the S.D.L.”

The spotlights moved once more to the entryway as the announcer came back onto the loud speakers.

“The silent fighter with no eyes to see, and no words to speak. Let’s make some noise for Raidan!”

With another blast of lights and smoke surrounding the arena, Raidan walked down into the arena his solid red eyes glancing around to the sounds of the crowd that roared all around him. He didn’t wave like Anya did instead just strolled to the bench and sat beside Anya looking back to the entrance with the lights going dim once more.

Sarah gripped her hand into a fist. “Here he comes…”

The lights trickled with small bolts of blue electricity coursing along the entryway.

“And now ladies and gentleman…Now entering the arena, the number one fighter in the S.D.L., the caption of Team Ender…NightDragon!”

The crowed erupted once more with cheers as they watched the lone black dragon walk into the arena his leather mask clasping to his draconic face tightly with his tonfas hanging from his holster. Sarah could only stare down at him wishing that she could jump down from the balcony and take her revenge on NightDragon.

Suddenly she heard a deep growl coming from her side, and turned to see Drake looking down to the floor with an almost rage in his eyes. He had pulled off his glasses allowing his ice blue eyes to fully show themselves to her.

“Drake?” she said moving close to him, “Drake, are you alright?”

“He uses two tonfas as his main weapons, which can only surmise that he uses a defensive fighting strategy. His dragon bipedal legs give him great speed, which he uses to block his opponent until he tires them out and uses the electric jolt from his weapon to submit his opponent.” Drake said with a voice that Sarah had never heard him speak with. It was not of a child, but more mature and calculating, but which surprised her most was how he was ranting about NightDragon’s potential weaknesses. She grasped his shoulder and shook him. “Drake snap out of it.” She called to him, but his eyes still focusing onto NightDragon down on the arena floor.

NightDragon walked across the arena floor; feeling the cold stone floor along his clawed feet. His hand rested on the hilt of one of his tonfas while his ears perked from the crowd’s roar of excitement to his presence. However, the feeling wasn’t mutual. The cheers of the crowd were not cheers to him, but merely a cry for blood and violence. “Entertainment” was the word used for these matches, for these fights, but in reality, it was just quench the thirst of the crowd. They lusted for blood to be spilled, and the weak to be destroyed in this place; in this arena.

The crowd didn’t care about the fighter’s will, the strength, or the mind that it took to walk into that fateful arena. A fighter could die any night and there would be no mourn, but just the every lasting cheers that came from the crowd as they cried for more of the “entertainment”. For this NightDragon hated the crowd, but this was the life of a Shadow Driver that he knew all too well.

Suddenly, a chill coursed through Night as he came to the center of the oval. It ran down his neck all the way to his tail. It felt a cold wind inside him. He looked up to the crowd; the cold chill seemed to pull his eyes there. Soon his eyes came upon a figure that leaned against the balcony with what appeared to be Sarah Hart of NeoGen by his side holding a hand onto his shoulder. The unknown figure was wearing normal street clothes, but even Night could see through that disguise of his seeing the dark skin and the pointed ears that came out of the baseball hat that he wore. Indeed, what Night was seeing was another dragon shadow form, but as Night’s dark red eyes came upon the other dragon’s blue eyes, time seemed to stop. He couldn’t hear roar of the crowd anymore it was just complete silence as he stared into those intense blue eyes.

“Night!” a voice came into his head.

“Elisa? How are you-“

“I know him.”

“What? Who?”

“The dragon with the blue eyes…I know him somehow…”

“How do you know him?” Night questioned, but before she could answer him, reality came back as the sound of the crowd filled his ears. He scanned the crowd once more trying to find the dark dragon he saw, but he couldn’t see those blue eyes again. Even the cold chill that he had felt before was gone. His eyes narrowed once more as he turned his back to the crowd and sat down on the bench beside Anya and Raidan who both looked at him in wonder, but didn’t say anything.

Night looked once more to the crowd and wondered who was the dark dragon he saw, and how did Elisa know him?
