Though I Loved Her Best

Two people had a daughter

An angel from above

And since she was the only one

Her life was full of love.

Her name was hardly spoken

And only with delight

Her parents tried to hold her back

To keep her in their sight.

She was living in a world

In which she needed to be strong

But when she tried to live her life

They told her she was wrong.

The worst that they could give her

Was the best I’d ever known

And though I loved her most

I could never approach her throne.

Then they began to worry

That she was all alone

So they let her go away

Thinking she was grown.

She never really knew me

Though I knew her well

Too many times I tried and failed

To draw her from the shell.

But they saw me looking

And took it as a threat

So they devised a way

To help her to forget.

So he came along

With an impressive family name

They in their meddling

Threw him into the game.

I knew that I was losing

And soon she would be gone

But I could do no more

And so a line was drawn.

He still had words to share

“Just let her be

You’ll never understand her

She belongs to me.”

Then the fight was over

I knew that I had lost

Never did I consider

What my cowardice would cost.

Years later I saw her

She still wore her crown

But though her mouth was smiling

In her eyes I saw a frown.

It broke my heart

To see her there

For I knew that I had helped

To lead her to despair.

Then I knew the truth

That she was just a pawn

And though I loved her best

I knew that she was gone.
