Midwinter Nights

Solitary times, bare and bleak
Of leafy bough and cheerful song,
Sorrow flowing from winter songbird’s beak,
Words coming low and slow and long.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Trees stand ‘round, bare, bleak, brown
Against winter’s silver backdrop,
Virgin winter’s frosty crown
Lain to rest on lost summer’s crop.

All amidst a veil of silence,

A lonely songbird’s solitary soliloquy
Drifts down from barren limb,
All that life’s last, lost child has to say.
That clear, crisp sound; a comely hymn.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Land is swathed in winter’s robes
And clothed in her glistening ballgown,
Sparkling beneath starlight strobes
Silver symphonies play ‘gainst backdrop brown.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Continuous crystal skies
Embedded with glinting gems
Silent watchers, winking eyes
Espy the world in winter’s trims.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Here I am standing, stationary,
Lost in thought and beauteous wonder
Beneath the frozen, twilight canopy,
Surveying the world’s long, lengthy slumber.

All amidst a veil of silence,

I’m lost beneath the grim, grey seal,
Embedded with winter’s dark face,
Watching autumn’s blood congeal
And blanket all in this chill place.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Survey the hardened fields and soil,
Bare beneath, as hard as iron,
Survey the spring and summer’s toil
Lost beneath the barren cairn.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Glance around at bare tree limb
With empty fingers searching skyline,
Glance around as loose leaves swim
And flutter freely, intricate dances intertwine.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Feel the sweet, sharp sensations
Of winter’s chill and lonesome nights,
Feel them elevate emotions
And fill the mind with wondrous sights.

All amidst a veil of silence,

Midwinter nights are long and wild,
Full of frost, chilled to the bone,
Along the highroads wanders winter’s child,
Amidst the beauty he calls home.
