There was a time,
A ‘Once upon a time’,
When we danced in the rain
And played in the snow.
We’d paint the roses red if it pleased us
And sit in the chessboard garden doing absolutely nothing
No annoying clocks to interrupt with chimes
No white rabbits scurrying about
Just you and I and nothing more
Dearest Cheshire would lead us nowhere
Not that it mattered as we laughed along the way
It never made the slightest difference which path we followed
Somehow or another we’d end at that tea party
With Hatter and Dormouse and Hare
Praise our Unbirthdays then wander off again
Such a simple time that was
It’s a shame we had to grow up
Yet somehow you remain that little girl
Though no longer in that awful pinafore
Sometimes I wonder if you ever left our wonderland;
I’d like to visit it again myself
