Writing Poetry

There was once a time
When all my poems had to rhyme
And so it usually meant
That most of my time was spent
Trying to make some sense
Out of senseless rhymes

But now that time has gone
I know what I didn’t know then
I know that a poem
Doesn’t have to rhyme,
Doesn’t have to flow
Doesn’t even have to make sense

I still write a few that rhyme
I go back to those when I
Just want to remember those days
When I wrote poetry and didn’t think
About the things I leant in English Lit
And other stuff that’s happened since then.
