you drag yourself along the floor
picking up the pieces I threw down
I turned my back on everything
leaving you to fall to the ground
I drink you in, every single moment
I don’t realize I’ve dreamed of you
until the next day
the words I write are for your eyes
things my lonely lips and frozen fingers
will never manage to say
that so much time has been wasted
on this relationship held together
with old fashioned wishes on stars
that it’d be a shame not to waste any more
carry me on with just enough strength
to be able to smile as you walk out the door
cliché phrases come to mind
but I kick them out with closed eyes
when things change back will I wake up
to find my life moving on without you
you find it easiest to hold on to
what you never exactly had
so maybe that’s why I’m searching so hard
for a replacement, another answer key
because really that’s all you are to me
if I were to die tomorrow
you’d be the one able to bare my soul
to the congregated world as a whole
fit into the tiny box I never saw out of
when I viewed my life from deep inside
you could read from passages reviewed
a thousand times over poised
for you to hear, you weren’t meant to hear
so that’s why I won’t die tomorrow
no, because I’ll wake up tomorrow
and then I’ll make the motions assigned
and come home late at night
to realize I’ve been walking with closed eyes
dreaming of you.
