Chapter 4:

War can be a terrible thing. A hardship that very few ever forget once they have experienced it. Of course, war between Heaven and Hell is worse then any mortal war.

Sho had just received his summons; a "lovely" little message brought to him by bat. It was simple and plain, though the paper looked as though it had been slightly scorched and the words had been written swiftly. It requested no, more to say demanded his presence back in Hell. Sho made quick time, for he knew his lord would have been angry had he dawdled.

His weary legs and panting body reached the large room that enclosed his master’s throne. However, he had sometime trying to squeeze in. The room was crowded with demons, slaves, and other loyal creatures that lived to serve the mighty lord of the underworld. Sho eventually found himself next to a slightly older looking cat.

He was larger then Sho, and Sho had grown in size, (now nearly the size of a bobcat). His fur was a deep reddish-brown, though it was hard to tell with the dir that was matted into it. His ears stood tall and perked and there was no sight of a tail. Perhaps he lost it. Was what Sho thought to himself as this other cat let up a roar along with his fellows who had also gathered here.

Sho hadn't a clue as to what was happening, so he inquired about it with this feline.

"What's going on?"

The larger cat stooped his head, his eyes were a deep orangish red and his voice held a note of friendliness that most demons in hell hadn't.

"It's talk of war jinx, we're gonna see some action."

Sho was confused.

"Who are we going to war against?"

The cat laughed with feeling.

"You must be pulling my tail! Surely you know?"

Sho sadly shook is head. The older cat blinked, a bit dumbfounded, then considered him in a soft tone.

"You haven't been here long have ya jinx?"

"I've been here 25 years." Sho stated as though this should have been outrageously long. All he got was a hearty laugh from the older feline.

"25 huh? Think your hot shit, eh jinx? I've been here over two hundrad and fifty some years naw. You got nuthin' on me, jinx."

"My name isn't jinx," Sho mumbled. His ears laid somewhat flat.

"Sorry, didn't mean to strike a nerve thar jin..kid," he changed his mind mid-sentence as he saw Sho begin to growl. "Anyhow, name's Kae. You best be stickin' with me. A member o' Hell's army that don't know were in war wit Heav'n is a dangerous ting," he picked himself up as the groups began to retreat out of the room.

Sho took a minute to register this, then chased after him.

"Wait a minute! We're going to Heaven?"

"Nah, we're goin' ter Earth," Kae sighed in fustration, side stepping a goblin. " O' course we're goin' ter Heav'n! What else would Satan want? He's had his eye on the Holy Father's throne for evar," Kae dodged past a few slower demons and took a flying leap, landing a bit unsteadily upon the back of a large dragon. Sho followed suite, only questioning the move after he was sitting next to Kae.

"Simple," he started as he moved over a bit to make room, "if we didn't catch a ride, we'd be walkin', and dats a lot a stairs ta climb, jinx. Besides, this way we don't miss out on da action. Hold on dar jinx!" Kae had shouted the last part as the dragon, along with several others (also weighted down with creatures who couldn't fly) lurched into the air. Sho braced himself and shouted into the rushing torrents of wind.

"My name is Sho!"

XXX

It wasn’t a long ride, the dragon’s speed was amazing despite it’s massive size. Its leathery wings would beat in a smooth rhythm. The Dragon's body, however, lurched with each pump, making it toss to and fro in the air. Kae was enjoying every minute of this. The wind tussled his fur and he was used to the unsteady mount. He smiled and roared with excitement.

"How ya holdin' dar jinx?"

Sho wasn't holding well, the luerchy feeling that vibrated in his stomach from the rough ride was unsettling. "My name is Sho damn it! And so far, I hate this!" He tried to swallow, but his mouth was dry from the swift winds that pummeled him, and he felt like there was a hairball stuck in his throat. Kae laughed at him.

"I like ya jinx! Tell it like it is!"

Sho was too dizzy to rebut him and simply stayed quiet.

He didn't get much piece, as the dragon swooped into a head on dive. Just as Sho thought it would never end, the dragon's massive form struck solid ground. It landed with such force, Sho jolted from it's back, landing upon the foggy surface in a bit of a mangled lump. His landing was a disgrace, not just because he was the only one who fell, but the fact that he hadn't landed gracefully as all cats do. Kae leapt down, landing beside him, shaking his head with a chuckle as Sho struggled to regain his dignity.

"Did yer ass break yer fall dar jinx?"

Sho shook himself and walked past Kae in the direction of the demons were proceeding. As he passed Kae, he laughed in a sarcastic manner, letting the blade tipped tail flick a little close.

"Ha, ha, ha.... very funny."

Kae watched him as he passed, noting the tail and made a mental note to himself. Then, he fell in line with the rest of the brigade.

Sho continued moving, thinking about the task at hand. He had never been in war, never seen it play out, never experienced what it was like. He knew how to fight, mostly short tussles as a kitten, lately more serious blood shed since he had been in Hell, but was war a whole different creature. Isn't it? He asked the question to himself as the movement halted. Something was holding the front line, but Sho couldn't see what, as he was of a smaller stature compared to the towering 10ft demons crowded in front of him. He did hear whispers and grumbles of, "That damn gate," and "Bloody fence".

There was a creak, the sound of metal crunching, a couple of loud "bam"s and then the order to attack bellowed through the ranks.

It was as if Heaven suddenly died. Some Angel's didn't hang around, they ran swiftly, but most stopped to fight in order to protect their home, the one place of true peace. Those who ran never got very far. Demons are merciless creatures. Each angel that was caught in claws or jaws was instantly torn to shreds.

Sho barely got into the fight, mostly watching Kae's back as they ran through the crowded streets of Heaven, dodging corpses and the flying claws of other demons. It was as Sho was dodging one of these said claws that he rolled into the blade of an angel.

The angel stood tall, as he withdrew the blood soaked blade, behind him cowering was a rather young angel, sweet and innocent.

Sho had barely enough time to take in the picture as the blade came crashing towards him again. He dodged out of the way and rushed forward. The angel threw up his blade to block, for if he hadn't, Sho's claws would have by passed him and caught the child.

Sho played stalemate for awhile and then released backing up. He charged once more, lunging at the angel's throat. He would have killed him instantly. The older angel would have been the one to die, but another demon's claws knocked him out of the way. Sho was unable to stop himself.

XXX

What happened next would forever haunt Sho. Unable to stop himself, his claws caught the delicate wings of the angel. He felt them tear, his body landing a crouch upon the smoke covered ground and his ears rang with a scream of pain and anguish.

Sho couldn't look. He couldn't stay there, but he was frozen stiff. It was one thing to kill an angel in a clean sweep, but to lop off their wings, to have them suffer pain. He couldn't take that quilt.

That's when he felt a clawed paw hit his head. As he recovered himself from the shock, he opened his eyes and found Kae.

"Come on jinx, we gotta git outta here...thar callin' a retreat," he turned and ran back towards the gates, several wounds leaking blood as he did. Sho picked himself up and followed after him.

XXX

The retreat had left thousands of demons and angels alike in cold blood. Heaven had one, but the once white world had been tainted with red. Angels died but the worst fate fell upon the youngest. Sho had dealt a cruel blow, a blow that hadn't meant to deal.

His mind was now haunted by her cry of pain, as was his corrupted heart.
