The Illuminated Trail
The sun has fallen to pave way for the candles
To flare the brightest under the midnight canopy
On this island represented by the passing sorrow
And symbolized by the burning hope within our souls.
Candles in my sight symbolize the fallen
Amassing a trail for the loved ones to walk
We weep with one another and cherish our lives
Standing over the malady until the candle burns out.
And with a candle of my own, I walk down this trail
With the fresh wax dripping onto my cold hands
Tears fill my eyes as I witness the tragedy
One shared by millions across the edges of humanity.
I turn my gaze to you, my love, as you walk beside me
Holding my desperate hand with your candle in the other
We pray for one other to never fall to such illness
To die side by side and to die without torment.
And so I turn my mind to the victims of yesterday
To the innocuous whose sickness sent them to the grave
I bid each of you farewell into the new afterlife
And pray for this trail to someday be dimmed.
