But It Will

Congratulations, Class of 2008, you’re moving on! says the principal into the microphone and then he lets us go. And we cheer and shout and in one big wave rush out of the auditorium, dodging wide-armed, teary-eyed parents and head for the gym where the lights like the ones on police cars are already whirling and the music is blaring.

Spiraling crazy, back and forth, back and forth, lights flashing, slip-sliding, laughing laughing laughing, never going to stop laughing. My friends are all around me and they’re laughing too, and we form a big circle and dance and dance, moving in and out and in and out.

And when it’s over I’m giggling and sobbing and I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing all at the same time, thinking I’ve never been happier than this, it doesn’t get better than this.

But it will. It will get better than this. This is only the beginning. And I’m already laughing.
