So Close…

Scattered conversation falls away to comfortable silence,
We sit together, lost in each other’s presence,
I lower my arm around your shoulders, and,
I pull you close; I feel your head nestle
Against the hollow of my collarbone.

(So close, so close yet so far)

The silence, sleepy and close envelops us,
Wrapping us in its bubbles, lost to the world
Little whispers of “I love you” intrude and,
I feel your cheek rise, your lips curl into
A soft smile, your eyes narrow in delight.

(So close, so close yet so far)

The evening drags on but, we sit unmoving,
Lazily we lie against each other, dozing,
Our eyelids drooping, the radio playing in the background,
The music, hazy, plays on,
The gilded moment rolls softly away with the sun.

(So close, so close yet so far)

Eventually we stir, whispering apologies,
“I’m sorry babe, I have to go”
We sit up, moving slowly apart,
We drift away as my connection fades
And I switch off the monitor.

(So close, so close yet so far)
