The Raven’s Journey

As the raven flew off

Into land unexplored

His mother called out ‘don’t go’

‘Because men may be there and they can do things’

‘Things I don’t want you to know’

But ravens are like humans

And they eventually must leave

All creatures must go

He flew off to the land unexplored

And to his greatest surprise

The only inhabitant was a young lad

Laying quietly on his side

The raven flew down to see the young lad

And found that the boy was near dying

Because of injuries he had

And all the while, the boy was quietly crying

‘Young sir, what is wrong? Am I able to aid you?’

Asked the raven with kindness in his heart

The boy answered back

‘Nothing, I’m sure. Indeed my future looks black’

‘But young lad, there must be a thing my poor soul can do’

‘You don’t look ready to die’

‘I know’ said the lad

‘But my days shall be numbered’

‘Ah’ said the raven with a gleam in his eye

‘You know the earth and I know the sky’

‘I know I can help I know that I will’

And he let up a call that was very shrill

Some men, not far away

Heard the call and looked away

But another party heard it

And found the poor young lad

As the kindly men helped the boy

He turned to the raven and said

‘If not for you, my friend, I surely would be dead’

And the raven cawed goodbye with sadness in his heart

Everything has kindness, even a small part

And the raven knew that that boy was his friend

And someday they would see each other again

The raven learned, as should you, that there is always something you can do
