Evil Days
By: Izzy-chan
As Colby Crusack rested his face against the cool glass of the bus window, he couldn’t be happier to be leaving his home. He was going to a University to study music, something he felt passionately about since he was a child. Whenever he played the piano, he could escape into his imagination. He did read music and played classic composers, but also wrote his own work, just sat at the piano and played what he felt.
He eagerly leapt off the bus when it arrived at his stop. He found his way to his dorm, lugging his belongings up to the room. His roommate was already there, unpacked, lying on a bed and talking on a cell phone.
“No, no baby, that won’t happen...You know I love you...Look, my roommate just walked in. Yeah, bye boo.” He flipped his phone closed, a smile on his face. “Hey what’s up? I’m Matt.”
“I-I-I’m C-Colby,” he winced as he spoke the words.
“Dude, do you always stutter like that?”
Colby nodded, ashamed. He never could understand why he could never get his voice to work like he wanted it too. That was the main reason why he loved music so much, words weren’t needed to express feeling.
“Hey, I’ll get out of your way while you unpack. ‘Sides there’s some beautiful women that need my attention.” Matt slapped him on the back. “Good to meet ya’ buddy. Later.”
Colby watched him leave, before getting started on his things.
When he was finished unpacking, Matt had not returned. He decided to go exploring and found the music building. He went into a practice room, sat at a piano and played. He could lose himself in the music, escape from the reality of his life.
He hadn’t realized how much time passed. It was late, nearing midnight. He went back to the room to hear the sounds of sex behind the door. Lovely. Just what he needed. He slid down the wall to sit with raised knees. He laid his heads in his hands and waited.
A few minutes later, the door next to him creaked open. A topless black guy walked out. He spotted Colby and knelt down to his level. Colby noticed that the other boy had bright blue eyes, contrasting greatly with his dark skin. Coming from a small town, Colby hadn’t seen very many black people, none as dark as this boy. His skin looked warm, smooth and soft. Colby wanted to reach out and pet him, but pushed aside that strange thought.
“What you doin’ out here white boy?”
“Umm...I-I-I...” Then Colby didn’t need to explain himself because the girl in the room shrieked in pleasure.
The other boy raised an eyebrow. “C’mon.”
“W-w-what?”
“C’mon. The way I see it, the only way you’re gettin’ any sleep is if you sleep in my room.”
Colby looked up, grateful. “T-t-thank y-you.”
The black boy extended a hand, taking Colby’s. “I’m Marcus.”
“C-c-colby.”
Marcus pulled Colby to his feet. Colby was a good head shorter than Marcus. He had to look up to meet Marcus’s eyes.
Marcus was smiling a bit, revealing straight white teeth. He led Colby into the room. “It’s a single.” He tossed Colby a blanket and pillow. “You’ll have to sleep on the floor.”
“T-t-thank you,” Colby whispered as he set up.
Marcus just shrugged and got into bed.
xxx (Next morning)
Marcus woke and almost stepped on the boy sleeping on the floor. In the morning light, he got a good look at the other boy. He was curled up and innocent looking. He had longish blonde hair that brushed his jaw line. Pale skin was marred only by a small beauty mark on his left cheek. His mouth was full, his lower lip pouty. He was a good-looking kid.
Marcus reached down and shook his shoulder. “Hey kid, get up.”
Sleepy blue eyes opened to look up at Marcus.
“Mmmmm! I-I’m s-sorry.” He bolted up, folding the blanket.
“Calm down now. I didn’t know if you had early class or not. Stay as long as you like.”
“T-thank you again Marcus. I-I-I do h-have an early class.”
Marcus smiled. “Remember, if you need anything, just knock ya’ hear?”
Colby tentatively smiled back. “O-okay.”
Marcus watched Colby leave. He couldn’t explain why, but he had instantly liked the other boy. Maybe it was because he seemed so innocent and unjaded, just sweet.
Shaking himself out of thought, Marcus got ready to face the day.
xxx (Colby)
When Colby opened the door to his room, whoever was in there last night had left. Matt was awake and dressed.
“Hey man, sorry about last night,” Matt apologized.
“I-i-it’s okay. I-I stayed with our neighbor.”
“Marcus? Yeah, he’s one cool dude. You sure you don’t mind though? I don’t wanna be putting you out.”
“N-n-no. I-i-it’s okay. J-just give me some w-warning.”
Matt looked a bit guilty. “Then ya’ might not wanna stop in tonight. Sorry dude. I’ll try to switch up locations next time.” He slapped Colby on the back. “I gotta go. See ya’.”
Colby did a quick clothing change, grabbed his books, and went to his first class.
The first couple classes were easy for Colby, music theory and literature. His third class for the day was his private piano class. He was a bit nervous because he wasn’t sure how advanced the professor expected him to be.
He walked in the door and was greeted by a woman with incredibly curly brown hair. She smiled at him, a large, but pleasant, smile.
“Hi. You must be Colby. “I’m Professor Denby, but you can call me Ann.”
“I-i-it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Let’s hear you play.” She gestured for him to sit at the piano. “Now I’m going to get out some music and I want you to sight read as much as you can. Don’t be nervous, it’s just for me to see where you are.”
She placed the first piece on the piano and sat back to listen to Colby play. When he finished, she was silent for a bit. Then she pulled out the last piece that she had selected and indicated him to play. He glanced over it quickly before placing his hands on the piano and playing. When he stopped, he looked to his professor for approval or disapproval.
Ann opened and closed her mouth as if searching for words. “You are brilliant Colby!”
Colby beamed with pride. “T-thank you.”
“I’m so excited to work with talent like yours! Would you be interested in being an accompanist for some of the voice majors? There are upper classsmen that are having recitals this semester and need to practice with a talented accompanist.”
“I-I Ummm, yes I will play.” Colby felt as if he couldn’t stop smiling. Someone saw talent in him. He felt as if he was floating.
“Good. I’ll speak with the vocal instructors. We’ll work with your schedule. I’ll get in touch with you later today.”
“O-okay.”
Colby played for the rest of the time, until his next class.
xxx (dinnertime)
Colby was surprised by how many people were at the cafeteria. He made his way through the people to get some food.
“Hey Colby.”
The voice and hand on his shoulder caused him to turn. The owner was a boy who was in Colby’s music theory class. He was tall, broad shouldered with short chestnut brown hair and hazel eyes.
“H-hey. I-I’m sorry. I-I-I didn’t catch your name.”
“Oh that’s okay man. The name’s Shawn.” He shook Colby’s hand. “Ya’ know, I don’t know anyone else here. Do you wanna sit together?”
Colby nodded and they found a table.
“So, what’s your major?”
“P-piano performance.”
“That’s awesome! I’m a voice major myself. I want to do performance, but I don’t think I’m talented enough. I’ll probably end up a music ed major.”
“M-maybe I’ll play with you sometime.” Colby suggested.
Shawn grinned. “Now that’s a cool idea. What do you think about theory? I think it’s gonna be tough.”
“I-I took it in h-highschool.”
“That’s cool. I wish I did. Would you be able to help me if I needed help?”
Colby nodded. Shawn seemed like a pretty friendly guy. They chatted for a bit until Shawn had to go to another class.
“I’ll see ya’ around Colby.”
As Colby was leaving the cafeteria, he spotted Marcus sitting at a table, alone.
“H-hey Marcus.”
Marcus glanced up and smiled. “Hey kid. How was your first day?”
“G-g-good.” Colby was bursting to tell Marcus about his piano lesson, but didn’t want to annoy or bore the other boy.
“That’s good. Wanna sit down?”
“I-I-I already ate. B-b-but do you w-want c-company?”
“Sit down kid.”
Colby did so. “Ummm...I-I-I wondered if I c-could stay in your room again tonight.”
Marcus raised an eyebrow. “You’re roommate is having company again?”
Colby nodded, feeling his face flush with embarrassment.
“Hey Marcus, what’s going on babe?” A beautiful black girl came to the table. “Who’s your friend?”
“Shanita, this is Colby. Colby, Shanita.”
“N-nice to meet you.”
“Oh! He’s adorable.” Shanita sat next to him and pinched his cheek.
Marcus chuckled.
Some other people came to the table and were introduced to Colby. They were all very nice and Colby had fun hanging out with them. When dinner was done, they went off in separate directions. Marcus walked with Colby to their dorm.
“I-I-is Shanita your g-girlfriend?”
“Naw. She’s just a good friend. ‘Sides, she has a boyfriend.”
“Oh.” Colby felt embarrassed because he was wondering why she had a boyfriend when she knew someone as nice as Marcus.
“What are you here for?”
“P-piano performance.”
“That’s cool. I’m pre-med.”
Colby was a bit surprised. “T-that must be hard.”
“Yeah, it’ll be a lot of school, but I think it’s worth it.”
They reached their rooms.
“I-I’m going to g-grab some things before Matt gets back.”
“Ok.”
Colby went to his room, grabbing some clothes and books for the next day. He returned and closed the door. Marcus was putting away books at his desk. That’s when Colby noticed a single picture on the shelf. It was of Marcus and a white couple.
“W-w-who’s that?” He asked, gesturing to the picture.
“Those are my parents.”
“I-I-I...Ohhh...I-I-I” Colby was turning red again. He felt so horrible, as if he had offended Marcus for asking the question.
“Hey it’s okay.” Marcus smiled. “I’m adopted. I’m not ashamed of it. I love my parents.”
Colby smiled, feeling a bit better. “I-I h-hope I get a c-chance to meet them.”
“I’m sure you will.”
They both worked on homework in companionable silence, until Marcus put down his books.
“Wanna watch a movie with us tonight?”
“S-s-sure.”
Marcus led Colby to the floor lounge. There were already people seated on the couches, passing popcorn as previews went by on the screen. Shanita saw them and got up from where she was sitting.
“Hey cutie! Didn’t know you’d be coming!” She enthusiastically hugged Colby.
Marcus chuckled at the surprised look on Colby’s face. “Don’t smother him Shannie.”
“But he’s such an adorable white boy!”
They got seated and started the movie. It was a lot later than Colby usually stayed up and he felt himself drifting to sleep.
xxx (Marcus)
About halfway through the movie, Marcus felt pressure on his shoulder. He looked over to see Colby, fast asleep, leaning on him. He smiled a bit. The other boy was so innocent and childlike. It wasn’t even midnight yet.
Shanita nudged his other side, raising an eyebrow.
Marcus shook his head at her. He knew what she was thinking. She was one of the few that knew he wouldn’t turn away a male’s advances. He preferred women, but had found pleasure with other men.
The movie finished so Marcus gently woke Colby.
“Hey kid, time to get up.”
“Mmmm...” Colby’s eyes opened. “Oh! I-I’m sorry Marcus.”
“He don’t mind it,” Shanita joked.
“Shannie...” he turned to Colby and handed him the keys to his room. “Go get some sleep. I’ll be there in a few.”
Colby nodded and left the room.
“He’s staying with you?” Shanita asked.
“Yeah.”
They dropped that subject when Eric pulled out the tequila.
“I hate tequila,” Shanita declared after she downed the shot and chased it with lime. “I don’t see how you can drink it with just licking salt.”
“I don’t like lime,” Marcus shrugged. “It ain’t that bad.”
She shuddered.
Marcus hung out with his friends awhile longer before heading back. When he opened the door, Colby rolled over to face him.
“Y-y-you’ve been d-d-drinking.”
“I’m not drunk. Go to sleep Col.”
Colby didn’t listen and stood up. “I-I think I s-should l-leave.” He closed the door behind him.
Marcus sighed frustrated. He went out to see Colby sitting on the floor, knees to his chest. Colby looked up at him, so he crouched down to make them eye to eye.
“C’mon back. You need to sleep. You won’t be getting any out in the hall.”
“I-I-I don’t like a-alcohol.”
“I’m sorry. I won’t get any sleep if I know you’re out here.”
Colby sighed. “O-okay.”
Relieved, Marcus went back into the room. They both went to sleep soon after.
xxx (Colby)
Colby woke up that morning. Marcus wasn’t awake yet, so Colby quietly got ready for the day and left for his first class. On his way there, his piano teacher stopped him.
“Colby! I spoke to the vocal instructors and there’s a freshman named Shawn Kinney that needs an accompanist. Do you know him?”
“I-I think so.”
“That’s good. Here’s a schedule for practice times. I’m so glad that you can do this. I’ll see you next lesson.”
Colby said goodbye and looked over the schedule. The first practice session would be that afternoon. They were scheduled to meet twice a week.
“Hey Colby, did you hear the news,” Shawn galloped up beside him.
“Y-yeah. I’m p-playing for you.”
“Yeah,” Shawn beamed. “It’s gonna be so cool!”
Shawn babbled to him as they walked to their first class together.
After class, Colby walked with Shawn to the cafeteria. He thought that Shawn seemed like a pretty nice guy. He saw Marcus eating lunch with Shanita and some others. He smiled and Marcus smiled back.
Shawn pulled Colby to sit with some other music majors. They talked about what they were majoring in and what instruments they played and bragged about awards they won for their greatness. They seemed a bit stuck up to Colby, but easy to get along with. They all had music in common and Colby figured that since he’d be having most of his classes with them they should all get along.
After lunch, Shawn walked with Colby to the dorms.
“I can’t wait until later. I want to hear you play,” Shawn told Colby, looking at him from the corner of his eye as they walked.
“Y-yeah. I-it’ll b-be fun.”
“Well, I’ll see you then. Practice room 206.”
Colby said his goodbyes and went to his room. Matt was out, so he decided to do some work on his computer for awhile.
Matt returned a couple hours later.
“Hey man. How’s it going?” Matt beamed as he flopped onto his bed.
“O-okay. Y-you?”
“Spectacular.” Matt stretched out the word as he stretched on the bed.
They chatted for a bit. Colby liked Matt he seemed like a decent guy, despite the many night time visitors he invited to the room.
Colby left for the music building. It was time for him to play for Shawn. As he reached the music building, he heard someone call his name. He turned to see Marcus coming towards him.
“Hey white boy, there’s a basketball game tonight. Wanna come?”
“Y-yeah. That s-sounds f-fun.”
“Good. I gotta get to class. Later.”
Colby watched Marcus walk away for a minute before going into the music building. He went upstairs to the practice rooms. Shawn was already there, looking out the window. Glancing out, Colby could see that it gave a perfect view to where he and Marcus were just talking. Shawn looked up at him and smiled a bit.
“Right, let’s get started.”
He told Colby the order of the songs and they began. Shawn had a pleasing voice. It was a rich tenor sound, admittedly impressive for a person his age.
They went over the pieces for the allotted hour and Shawn seemed very satisfied by the session.
After snagging a bite to eat, Colby met Marcus, Shanita, and some of their friends. Colby felt bad because he couldn’t remember many of their names. Well, the majority of them didn’t talk to him much.
They found a spot on the bleachers. Colby could see some of the music majors sitting together. He smiled at them. A few smiled back, but he noticed Shawn frowning. He didn’t understand why.
The game was exciting for Colby. It was the first live basketball game he had ever been to. He never went to games in high school. There team won in a very close game. Colby told Marcus he’d meet them in the lounge later. He wanted to talk with Shawn.
Pushing through the crowd, he finally spotted the boy he was searching for.
“S-Shawn! W-what’s wrong?”
“Who’s that nigger you’re always with?”
“W-what?” Colby’s eyes widened in shock.
“You were the only white boy in the bunch. The rest were all colored. How could you hang out with people like that?” Shawn’s voice was bitter and angry.
Colby’s mouth opened and closed a coupled times. Letting out a sob, he pushed Shawn and ran towards the dorm. Tears were streaming down his cheeks. How could someone be so cruel? How could he say such mean things about people he knew nothing about? Thoughts jumbled through Colby’s head as he ran up the stairs. Marcus happened to see him before he reached the lounge.
Pulling Colby into his room Marcus asked, “What’s going on?”
Colby couldn’t seem to form the words. He just sobbed and threw himself into Marcus’s arms.
Surprised, Marcus caught the other boy. He rubbed Colby’s back in slow circles. “Now, now kid. Tell me.”
Brokenly, Colby told Marcus about Shawn and what he said. “I-I-I-I don’t l-l-like h-him a-anymore.”
Marcus couldn’t help smiling a little. Colby was just too adorable.
“Y-y-you’re my f-friend M-Marcus.”
As Colby spoke the words, his lips brushed against Marcus’s neck, warm breath ghosting across his skin. Marcus knew it was completely innocent and totally unintentional, but found himself suddenly appreciating the body that was pressed against him. He’d never been with a white boy before, but now was a bit interested.
Pulling away, he told Colby that everything would be okay. When Colby had calmed down enough, they went to the lounge to join the others.
xxx (Later)
Colby needed to stay with Marcus again that night. He couldn’t sleep. Marcus was already asleep. Colby knelt by the bed, eyes roaming over Marcus’s exposed torso. He didn’t understand the fuss over skin color, in fact he thought that Marcus was quite lovely to look at. His skin looked so smooth.
Before he realized what he was doing, his hand was on Marcus’s chest. It was just his fingertips, but the contact caused Colby to flinch away. He jumped back, expecting Marcus to be awake and yelling at him. But Marcus only sighed in his sleep, shifting a bit.
Curious and a bit bolder, Colby repeated the action, running his fingers across Marcus’s skin. He felt so warm, smooth and hard. Colby didn’t know why, but he found it harder to breath. He felt so hot all of sudden.
As he circled around Marcus’s naval, he felt a hand clamp around his wrist.
With a feeling of dread he looked up to see Marcus’s eyes opened.
