Chapter 1
-----
…The world is so cold.
Why am I even here?
There’s no love;
All there is is fear.
So why then do people try?
When they know that they’re just gonna die.
So why to I try the way I do?
It’s because…
Eimi listened to the song on the radio as she thought of what to write in her note, lying down on her bed. This song seemed to fit the mood. Right now was the first part of the song, but she never really paid attention to the end of it. She liked this part better.
“Eimi! The bus is almost here!” her mother called to her from downstairs.
“I’m coming!”
She jumped off of her bed, taking the note with her, quickly turned off her stereo, and grabbed her backpack off of the chair in front of her. She stuffed the note into her backpack as she ran out of the room. She slid down the wooden handrail and landed at the bottom floor. Her mom handed her her lunch and kissed her on the cheek
“Have a good day at school,” her mother said with a smile.
“I will,” Eimi smiled back.
She ran out to the yellow school bus and got on. As she made her way through the crowded seats, she spotted one at the very back that was empty, next to a guy with brown hair that fell just over his gray eyes. It was her usual seat, next to her best friend Ryan. He waved to her as she walked over.
“Good morning,” he said cheerfully as she sat down next to him.
“’Morning,” she answered back.
The bus driver started driving again. They felt the acceleration push them back as he headed for their school.
She dug through her backpack and stuffed the note down lower, so no one would see.
“Hm? What’s wrong?” Ryan asked her.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Eimi answered with a smile.
He smiled back.
“Man, my weekend was so boring,” he said as he put his hand behind his head. “My dad took me fishing up at the lake. I sat there for about 4 hours just staring at the water. Neither one of us caught anything.”
“Wow, I’d hate that.”
“Yeah, me too, except for the fact that once we got out of the boat, we saw someone fighting with one of the geese over there trying to take back his lunch, though I don’t see why he’d want it back.”
He started laughing. Eimi laughed too. Ryan always told interesting stories in the morning on the bus.
It seemed like she had just gotten on the bus when it stopped in front of their school. They saw the students in front slowly get up to get off, some of them yawning on the way. At least no one was asleep again.
As Ryan hopped off the last stair of the bus, he turned around to the bus driver, a young man in his 20s, and gave him a thumbs up. The driver returned it with a mischievous smile.
“sigh Looks like he’ll be ditching class again…” Eimi thought to herself.
Ken, their bus driver, and Ryan were unusually close friends. A couple years ago they had met at a gaming convention in the next town over, and they’ve been buddies ever since. It was a surprise to Ryan when he found out that he was their driver. So, once in a while, Ryan ditched his first periods to hang out with him. Eimi didn’t really mind, since because of Ryan, she was friends with him too.
“I’ll meet you by the back gate in 5 minutes, okay?” Ryan said.
“Right,” Ken answered, and he closed the door and (supposedly) drove off.
Once Ryan and Eimi got into the front gate, Ryan told her, “I’ll see you soon, okay?”
Eimi smiled. “Okay then. Have fun.”
He smiled a big smile and ran off, making sure no teacher saw him.
She walked over to her locker, past the hundreds of students hanging around and talking before the class bell rings.
As she turned the lock to put in her combination, someone put their hands over her eyes to cover them. Her head was pulled back slightly.
“Guess who,” the person said.
“…I give up. Who is it?”
“It’s me, Mike.”
He took his hands off of her eyes and smiled as she turned around to see him, a tall, good-looking boy about a year older than her with short spiky black hair.
“Oh, it’s only you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Am I that unimportant to you?” he said with a fake sad tone.
“Yep,” she said as she finally opened her locker.
“You’re so mean…”
“I know that,” she answered as she put some of her books in her locker.
He put his arm around her and whispered in her ear, “Hey, why do you hate me so much? I only do this because I like you.”
She kept an emotionless face as she closed her locker door. Then she pried his arm off of her and said, “Because you never leave me alone. Just because you hang around a girl doesn’t mean that she’ll automatically like you. I’m not like those other girls you’ve done this to.”
In fact, Mike was very popular with the girls, mainly because he was such a flirt. But for some reason, he seemed to really show interest in Eimi, which was a rarity. He never really paid attention to just one girl.
He stood in front of her, his hands in his pockets, standing in a relaxed posture. A couple girls walked by giggling and blushing.
“I know you’re not like those other girls. That’s why I like you so much.”
Eimi walked past him.
“Whatever.”
“Hey! Wait up!” he said as he ran after her.
She continued to walk as he ran up to her.
“Is it that bad that I like you? I mean, sure I can get annoying…”
“I’ll say,” she remarked.
“…ahem, but that’s beside the point. I have a lot of good qualities too, you know. Why won’t you give me a chance?”
“Maybe because you hurt a lot of my friends because of the way you flirted with them, with all of them? How can you be so insensitive?”
“Hey, I was joking around with them. I even told them so.”
“Well, they all took it seriously. They liked you, Mike. They really did, and you just tossed that all aside, like it was trash. How are you to expect me to forgive you for playing with them like that?”
“Hey,” he said sternly. He backed her up against an empty corner, in a part of the school where barely anyone went to. He put his hands beside her and stared into her eyes. “If I had known they were really serious, I would’ve stopped. Don’t think that you’ve got me all figured out, Eimi. If I was really joking with you, I would’ve stopped a long time ago, after all the times you rejected me.”
Now all Eimi wanted to do was get out of there.
“Dammit Ryan…why’d you have to ditch at a time like this?” she thought to herself.
“Hey, leave her alone.”
Mike and Eimi both turned to look behind him. There stood Ryan, a video game in hand and his backpack swung over his right shoulder.
“Well, well, well, the prince has arrived,” Mike said sarcastically.
“Perfect timing. What took you?” Eimi remarked.
“Ken was just giving me a copy of the video game I wanted. Anyway, Mike, are you bothering her again?”
“Not bothering, exactly.”
“Yeah right,” Eimi said under her breath.
Ryan sighed. “When will you stop this? It’s pretty obvious that she’s not gonna go out with you, you know.”
Mike laughed. “Says who?”
“Says me,” Eimi said.
Mike turned to look at her.
“For the last time, I’m not going out with you. Get that through your head.”
She walked away with Ryan, Leaving Mike standing there.
“Someday…I will win you over, Eimi,” he said quietly.
A/N:
Yes, I kno, crappy ending. I don’t have much time to do as much as I want to, so that’s why I had to end it there. There’s really much more going on during the rest of the day, but I’ll just leave it there for now. I hope u guys liked the chapter, because of course, there’s more to come.
