Suspect Unknown

Chapter one

Partner

He lay on a bed drenched in blood, glaring around at the morbid carnage. Three bodies were sprawled across the bloodstained floor, dead with their limbs cut off. A scene that would make anyone sick to their stomach. He felt something next to him move she had nuzzled into his chest. He lightly pushed her away, got up and pulled his sword out of one of the bodies. He cleaned off the blood that dripped from it and sheathed it. He walked into the bathroom and looked into the red tinted mirror he had no wounds but still blood seeped into his tangled cloths. His face was also covered in it and his dark hair was stained. He groggily turned on the taps washing his face and hair. “Phoenix? Your awake?” The girl came in around him filling up a glass that was on the counter top and chugging it in one gulp.

“Yeah.” He looked her in the eyes coldly.

She ignored the look and went on, “Its too bad Master couldn’t have been here. I swear, if I ever found the person who murdered him I’d kill them. Wouldn’t you?” She stated the words calmly.

“Jade….. Of course I will. I promise. I will kill her.” He growled the words between gritted teeth.

“What makes you so sure it’s a she? We don’t even know who killed him yet.” She looked at him curiously. But there was something else in her emerald green eyes, amusement.

“Speaking of which…..” Phoenix struck her quickly through her heart splattering fresh blood across the back wall. “Traitor!” He shouted angrily withdrawing the Katana. He glared down at her growling. “You….. Go to hell!” He left wiping his sword clean.

Phoenix walked into the bar and sat at a table in the corner. “Hi!!!” An old man jumped out from behind the bar and sat with him. “Did you kill her?!” He said excitedly pulling at his long, silver braded beard with both hands.

“Yes. I wish you’d stop yelling. You don’t know how annoying you are. Maybe I should kill you too.” Phoenix sneered at the elder glaring daggers.

“You wouldn’t do that I know you better than you think!” He put on a wide, toothy grin blocking a punch.

“NO YOU DON’T! I could kill you I just don’t want to. Stupid old geezer.”

“So now you need to get a new partner don’t you? I know the perfect per…..”

“NO! I don’t need no fucking partner!”

“YES YOU DO!” The old man ran behind him and tugged at his shirt.

“Why should I do what you say?”

“Because I said so.”

“Like I’m really gonna do it cause you said.”

“Yes you are!”

“No I’m not.”

“Yes!”

“No.”

“I’m your elder!”

“Shit.” The wrinkled man patted him on the back.

“Good! I’ll go get her!” he skipped off eagerly with a wide smile on his face, singing to himself.

“I don’t need a partner. They all die anyways…..” Phoenix mumbled to himself putting his feet on the table. He waited a couple minuets for the old man to come back but when he didn’t he decided to leave. He got up from the table and started for the door.

“Oh no you don’t!” A drunk grabbed his jacket and pulled him back. “I wanna see your new partner man! YOU ALLWAYS GET HOTTIES!”

“Koto let me go….. Drunk idjet.”

“Its fine your going to have to face her sometime you know, so it may as well be somewhere I can see her too! He he! You want a drink?”

“Hmm…..” Phoenix grumbled and sat down sneering. The old man came out five minuets later dragging someone through the crowd. He grinned eagerly and pushed her out form behind him. The girl gave him an annoyed look and folded her arms turning to Phoenix, her face emotionless. She was about a head shorter than him, with black, blue and red streaked hair, her eyes were a dark shade of gray. She wore a studded belt that held up black cargo pants with strings hanging from the pockets, her tanktop was black with a golden dragon on it and around her wrist hung a spiked band.

“This is Tala Mikeo she was taught by yours truly for twelve years! She’s your new partner!” he put his arm around her gleefully.

“Hi…..” She snarled at the old man and pushed him off her.

“Hmm…..” Phoenix nodded his head in a greeting and stood up ready to leave.

“HEY WHERER YOU GOIN’ DUDE?! SHES HOT MAN!” his drunken friend shouted even though he was only about ten inches from him. He ignored but was caught by the old man who grabbed his wrist tightly.

“Take her with you! She will live with you from now on!”

“WHAT?! YOU STUPID ASS! YOU JUST WANTED TO DUMP ONE OF YOU FRIGGEN ORPHINS ON ME AGAIN DIDN’T YOU?! WHY THE HELL DO YOU ALLWAYS EXPECT I’LL TAKE THEM STUPID BAKA! I WON’T TAKE HER!” this had happened before but he wouldn’t let it happen again he couldn’t….. the stupid old man wasn’t even his master!

“Yes you will because I’m your elder!” The words rang in his ears ‘not again….. stupid piece of crap…..’

“…..Shit ….. come on….. does she have a bike?”

“Yes but its not like I want to go anyway….. stupid old geezer…..” she spoke and soon followed him out in silence.

They had driven back to the house in half an hour and were greeted by the many huskies that Phoenix had kept as pets, now they stood in the foyer, silence ran through the dark house as the dogs left them. When one finally spoke it boomed through the hall in an echo that seemed to surround them.

“You can take the last room, upstairs and down the hall. You should be comfortable.” She left slowly walking up the long, creaking steps, this house was not normal, it didn’t seem lived in, cold and seemed, too….. clean and unlived in. She made it to her room and standing before the door she took a deep intake of breath wondering what it would be like to live in this new place or if she would even bear it. She entered the room; it was of fair size with deep red walls and black, gothic styled furniture. She put the little cloths she had brought into a small dresser and gently laid her katana on the top of it, doing the same with her two daggers and guns.

“Hmm…..” she stared into the mirror thoughtfully concentrating hard. “…Wonder when we eat! Master was too hyper to cook, like I’d want to eat something he cooked anyway, ugh so much LIVER!” Her mind wandered back as she shivered at the horrid food he had made, an obsession with putting liver in everything he cooked had twisted her taste buds; the taste of liver still stung her tongue. “Grose…..” she went downstairs maybe he had something in the fridge to cure the hunger pains.

When she got to the kitchen Phoenix was there with one of the dogs which immediately jumped on her knocking her to the floor. The pup licked her face happily, “Fang seems to like you, strange, usually doesn’t like people.”

“Never would have guessed.” She gently pushed him off and stood up wiping off the drool. “I’m hungry, you have any food?”

“In the fridge.” Phoenix gestured to it stating the obvious.

‘Wow.’ She went to the fridge and opened it, it was mostly filled with leftovers, a pizza box and two dozen cans of root beer. She dug out an apple, one of the only fresh things there, she sat on a chair in the corner of the room and looked around it for the first time. The room was large for a kitchen, the walls were painted an orange colour, white marble countertops lined two walls with gray cupboards and chairs. Phoenix left the room heading upstairs, she listened to his foot steps get farther and farther away, silence coming over the hall again until it was finally broken. BOOM! The sound thundered trough the house shaking the glasses that lay clean in the sink breaking two letting the glass slip down the drain. Tala shot up reaching for her weapons but grabbing thin air. “SHIT!” Her mind went back to the dresser where she had laid the weapons. ‘Why did I leave them?’ she yelled at herself.

“MUA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA cough, hack, wheeze HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!” She herd a corny yet evil laugh from the front hall, rushing out she saw a man in a white trench coat standing in the rubble that was once the front door. The man was short and skinny with light brown hair and sparkling, green eyes. He turned his head and smirked at her drawing a broad sword from his hip “NOW ASSASIN YOU WILL DIE!!!” he yelled and pointed the sword at her overdramatically. “I, TOMITA THE ASSASIN HUNTER SHALL KILL YOU AND SAVE THE SOULS OF THE LIVES YOU HAVE TAKEN….. BLAH BLAH BLAH…..” He bragged on as Phoenix entered the hall tiredly.

“Oh, this dork is back is he?” He mumbled glaring at the blabbing semi midget. “Stupid baka, interrupted my nap….. TOMITA! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! AT LEAST WAIT UNTIL I WAKE UP!”

“Its called a ‘surprise’ attack it wouldn’t have been a ‘surprise’ attack if I had waited for you to be on your guard would it?!?

“IT WASN’T A SURPRISE ATTACK ANYWAY YOU BEAT IN MY DOOR IDJET!” Phoenix popped a vein yelling.

“Its part of the act!”

“Umm….. Uhh…..” Tala was at a loss, they seemed to know each other but she wouldn’t interfere, she might get hurt. She silently slinked up the stairs and passed behind Phoenix heading for her room.

“NO YOU’RE A STUPID ASS! AND….. WHO THE HELL IS THAT?” Tomita Glared up at her back, she had almost made it, only to open the door!

“Shit…..” a hand was placed on her shoulder and turned her around to face Phoenix.

“This…..” Phoenix started. “Is none of your concern….. I told you to leave, now leave!”

“OOOOooooo I see this is a touchy subject is it? What happened to the last partner in crime? Another dead?” Phoenix glared at him and pushed her away into her room slamming the door.

She herd their yelling still going on outside the walls, Tomita’s constant taunting and Phoenix’s retorts to the comments. What was bugging her though was not the fact that she had been rudely pushed out, or that her butt now hurt from the hard fall on the wooden floor. What bugged her was that they both had referred to her as an “it” and “this” as though she was a thing, the other was that it reminded her of being pushed away from fights that her brothers or her parents used to have when she was little. “god…..” she sighed and walked to her bed sitting on the soft sheets. “Please….. not another dream…..” She put her head on the pillow letting it sink into the down filled pillowcase smiling slightly, it had been so long since she had gotten to sleep in a real bed, let alone one that was this comfortable. She slipped into a deep sleep letting her dreams overtake her.
