the things you wish you’d learned

there are a thousand things you wish you’d learned:

like how to keep your feet from stopping dead,

and how to keep your heart from getting burned,

and what things would be better left unsaid.

and what to do with all your unbelief

when you know just what everyone would say.

and when you’re hit with overwhelming grief

because the morning means another day.

and what to do when everything goes wrong

and when you have forgotten every dream

and never feel like you will quite belong

because there’s no one who will hear you scream.

and what to do when silver feels like tin,

and how to wash the bloodstains from your skin.
