Roses,
Tulips,
A letter from son,
A windmill,
Toys,
“With love from mum”;
All of them lying on the new graves,
The presents for the dead;
Cards never opened,
Words never read.
“I love you”’s sent too late
“I’m sorry”’s out of date
Presents for the dead.
“They will not grow old as we who are left grow old”;
Their time is done.
They will never see another rising sun,
Will never read those words never said
Left among the poppies
With the presents for the dead.
