Make Me Something Beautiful

Don’t you know that hands
As beautiful and graceful as wings of
The first robin of spring
Should make me something lovely, why not
A bouquet of white daisies
Put them in a heart-shaped vase, painted
With tiny, skinny-handled paintbrushes
Carried by fingers that move lightly as
Butterfly’s golden wingspan
Always saying in a little voice of a child,
Ilove you this much and all the way to the moon
And back, way back in time these hands could craft
Soft, shelled necklaces for me to wear
Around my neck, to remember
Your gift of art and gentle force
As you press so lightly the keys of a piano
Play me a song, make it
A melody I’ve never heard but so familiar
Like the tunes you carry in your heart
So big and holding so much
Just as your hands can, so why don’t you
Make me something beautiful today
