"I told you again and again to stop talking back to me!"
"I'm sorry mom I wasn't talking back," fifteen-year-old Astral Tsubasa cried as she was slammed into the wall forcefully. She slid to the ground cowering below her drunken mother waiting for the onslaught that was sure to come; it all had started by a small argument over Astral's father who had left them three months back.
He had found another woman who was younger that satisfied his tastes, he wanted to take his daughter with him but the woman hated children. So she was dumped in her mother's custody, the court in the dark about her mother's drinking problem. She loved her mother still that's why she hadn't called the police on the abuse; however some people had an idea about it.
"Also do not say his name in this household again understand!" her mother hiccupped. Astral raised her head to eye her mother who was taking another sip of the green bottle that she held in her hand, she however ducked her head again as the assault began. As she sat there feeling her mother's slaps and punches she began to dream of a place where no one would hurt her, a place far away from her family and school, somewhere where someone would love her for who she was.
"Please mommy stop," Astral murmured over and over again. Then it stopped the beatings had halted for now, the girl noticed her mother upon the ground. Her mother had fallen sleep, giving Astral enough time to run into the kitchen. The girl quickly bandaged up a large gash on her forehead and covered up the bruises now forming around her eyes. She grabbed her book bag and ran out of the house heading towards school.
Astral was the last one into her tenth grade class before the teacher arrived; she quickly took a seat in the way back and hid behind a pile of books. She felt the heavy atmosphere as everyone turned to stare at her, whisperings traveling between them. She still wondered why they were scared of her so much; she had come to this school only last year and barely got to know anyone. When she first stepped into the building, that's when the rumors began to circulate.
"Hey Astral tried to kill anyone yet?" a deep voice yelled out quieting the whole room. Hero Daishi the class president, the football player and the most popular boy at Raven Black High School. He had kept the rumors going; he had made sure she never smiled since the day she got here. She just kept her head down refusing to look at him; she hated him with every fiber of her being. The door opened revealing the teacher or so she thought, two policemen stood in the doorframe searching the classroom.
"Astral Tsubasa?" one of the policemen called. Astral shot her head up surprised but she quickly rose from her seat walking straight towards the men.
"I knew she killed someone," Hero laughed. Astral quickly and quietly pushed through the men and into the hallway.
"What was that boy saying?" one of the men asked suspiciously.
"It's a rumor going around, now what did you want?" she asked.
"I'm very sorry but your mother committed suicide this morning," the first man spoke placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Oh," Astral replied without emotion.
"Your mother just died and you're not sad?" the man asked. Astral lowered her eyes down on the ground, she was free from her mother yet she wasn't smiling. No happiness came out of the death but no sadness either. She was free to get away from this place; she was finally allowed to leave. She clutched her bag and ran down the deserted hallway. The policemen where right behind her, but the urge of freedom allowed her get ahead of them. She quickly turned into an alleyway and watched the men pass before heading towards the other direction back home.
She grabbed the mail before heading to her room. It seemed that her mother took her own life somewhere else, because there were no cops swarming the place. She rummaged through the junk mail till she got a blue envelope addressed to her.
"I never get mail," she whispered. She ripped the letter open and stared at the piece of paper, a patch and a plane ticket that fell out. She began to read the letter:
Dear Mrs. Astral Tsubasa,
We congratulate you for you have been accepted into the Wing Institute, the most prestigious martial arts school in the world. We have found you through your school records and choose you for our reasons. You will be one of the first three girls to join in the history of Wing, so be proud of yourself for your accomplishment. If you would like to join us, be at the Raven Airport by ten o'clock tomorrow mourning where you will be picked up. Present your ticket and make sure to apply your patch on your uniform when they present it to you on the plane.
Sincerely,
Headmaster Eclipse
Astral sat there starring blankly at the paper trying to absorb everything. She dropped the paper and picked up the patch, it was a small circle with two wings flowing from the middle; WI was engraved into the middle of the wings. Was this some kind of joke? Or was this authentic? She had nowhere else to go so she decided to check this school out, if she didn't like it she would return here.
She quickly sorted through her thoughts and decided that she would make Hero Daishi pay for all her misery for the past year. She ran all the way back to school, without stopping for a break and slammed open the front doors. There were kids in the hallway signaling that the bell had just rung, Astral quickly spotted Hero leaning up against the lockers.
"Hero fight me!" Astral yelled making everyone freeze. Hero smiled as he turned to look at the furious girl before him.
"You sure you want to do that?" Hero laughed. Without warning he landed a punch to her stomach, she didn't even flinch since she was use to this pain. "Why didn't it have any effect?" he stuttered.
"Eight years of abuse from your mother allows you get use to this pain," Astral yelled sending a high kick to Hero's head. He flew into the lockers hard, sliding down to the ground not moving. "Revenge complete."
"Astral Tsubasa what are you doing! Never mind that, to the office right now!" Miss Dub yelled angrily as she hurried over to Hero seeing if he was all right.
"Sorry old hag but I'm leaving the country," Astral growled as she walked out of the building and returned home.
She quickly packed her bags, stuffed some money into her pocket from the cookie jar in the kitchen and headed out the door not bothering to lock it. It would take all night to walk to the airport, but she had no problem since she did it before. Her run away plan had backfired when she was caught trying to sneak on a plane; she had a very large bruise on her cheek for a week after that. While she walked she began to feel the burden that laid on her.
She was alone, without food, traveling to an unknown country, where she might end up getting killed. Sighing she steeped off into the road that would take her to her destiny and the place where she belonged.
