Staring at the Sun

It’s incredible how cold isolation can feel.

You’re loved; and you know it, but not quite the way you want to be.

There’s a song that goes “Love shines brighter than sunshine” and though it’s probably quite rightly viewed as trite, its almost painful how poignant it is. Like the sun it surrounds you; it can be seen everywhere you look, yet its still up there; unattainable. It hypnotises yet frightens. As much as you want that light in your life you’re still scared of being burnt.

The legend of Icarus was created for a reason wasn’t it?

Stretching the metaphor further, you can get artificial lights. They’re bright, yet not as high and unreachable. But they seem so cheap. Everyone can buy into the artificiality; can pretend its something they want when nothing really can compare.

Then there’s fire.

It’s the closest thing … it might not be quite as hypnotic; quite as desirable, but its still there; with its light and its heat.

But these things are still on the earth, while you - you still want the sky, still want everything you’ve dreamt of and wished for.

And in the end, that’s what hurts.

Everything you want seems so far, so unattainable that all you can do is stare at it longingly. And while all the lights and the fire can soothe the need, it can never completely erase it.

For when the lights have dimmed and the fire has burnt to ember, all that’s left is the sun. Burning a hole into you; distancing you from the world around as you fall into dreams of reaching it.

Which you never will.

Unless, maybe… maybe there is a way…

And though you might not know it - might not find it yet;

(Or worse - might get burnt in the process)

You know the warmth will be worth it.
