In The Dark Of The Night

Midnight blues drift along
The lazing contours of the night,
The sun’s warmth long gone;
A chill descends.

Cuddling for warmth, two lovers
Share a silent kiss by the water.
Set aside from the evening revelry,
They bask in the close silence.

Amplified footsteps, clear-in the chill,
Tread the empty streets, alone,
A feathered cloud drifts past,
Casting delicate shadows below.

Leaning, against a brick-work wall,
The silent silhouette lowers his head,
Features, yellow, beneath the glow
Of sodium street lamps.

He tips his hat to the couple,
Now headed home, to mellow warmth,
Impervious to the dewy mist, silent,
He resumes his position.

Beneath the amber light,
Outline-smudged in the rain,
Watching the world with an artist’s eye,
Behold! The Last Romantic.
