Chapter 10
Water helps she who needs it
“Oh we’re off to see the beach, the wonderful beach of… Grendly Forest!” sang Rebecca. Avalon just looked at her and rolled her eyes. Elizabeth and Lorna followed in pursuit, but Rebecca paid no attention to any of them, and she continued to sing when she suddenly stopped.
“Look!” she cried. Everyone stopped and turned to look in the direction that Rebecca was pointing in. A large group was forming and was getting larger by the second.
“What’s going on?” Avalon asked a boy that was standing near by.
“A girl got caught in an undertow or a current or something like that, all of these people are trying to help but they’re really just making things worse.” He replied before running off.
“Elizabeth, do you remember what Queen Fewa or rather Elli told us? She said that we can not die from our element, so get in there and save her!” said Avalon hurriedly. Elizabeth obeyed immediately, and she started to run towards the beach kicking off her shoes along the way. People just stared at her as she entered the water.
“She’s crazy!” said one person.
“She going to drown just like Crystal!” another person wailed. But Elizabeth paid them no mind and just kept heading deeper into the water, the only thing that mattered to her at the moment was getting the girl out of the water. Elizabeth went into the water until she was pulled down by the undertow.
“Ahhhhh!” screamed Elizabeth, even though she knew that the water could not kill her.
Okay, calm down. Whatever you do, don’t panic. Elizabeth thought to herself over and over again.
It was hard to see and move in the strong current but Elizabeth knew that if she just stayed with it, the current would take her right to where the girl was. After what seemed like a few minutes, Elizabeth found herself in what looked like an underwater cave.
“Hello? Is anybody here?” called Elizabeth, crawling onto a rock that was in the far end of the rock platform.
“I’m over here!” called a weak and shaky voice. Elizabeth looked around trying to see the source of the voice, but it was to dark.
“Come on, I need some light here!” she said, holding on to her necklace and rubbing it, when all of a sudden the necklace started to glow. “That’s better.”
She then saw a small figure huddled up in the corner of the cave. She tried to stand up and walk toward it, but then she realized that she couldn’t move her legs. She looked down to see why and realized that instead of legs… she had fins, like a mermaid.
“Is your name Crystal?” Elizabeth asked the girl, taking her attention off of her legs, trying not to scream.
“Yes.” The little girl replied. “Are you a mermaid because you kind of look like one?” asked Crystal. Elizabeth didn’t know what to say because she really didn’t know what she was.
“Well I am sometimes but other times I’m not…well, I mean… oh never mind,” said Elizabeth. “ Now, follow me.” Crystal looked at her like she was insane, but she did as she was told.
“Now, take hold of my hand, and hold on as tight as you can,” said Elizabeth. “I’m going to make a whirlpool that will take us up to the shore, it will go very fast, but you will still be able to breathe. Just think of it as a waterslide.” Crystal nodded her head and crawled over, Elizabeth guessed that she was only about eight or nine years old. Elizabeth held her hand about the water and started to move it in a clock-wise direction.
“Do you actually expect for me to jump in that?” asked Crystal in disbelief, as she watched a whirlpool appear. Elizabeth nodded and with her free hand, she grabbed a hold of the girl’s small hand.
“Hang on tight, ready and… jump!” commanded Elizabeth, Crystal took a deep breath and jumped into the water and Elizabeth slid off of the rock because she couldn’t stand therefore couldn’t jump. Crystal held onto Elizabeth’s hand for dear life and panicked when they slipped from each other’s grasp. It was a good thing that the whirlpool dropped her at the surface at that second. A very excited crowed gathered around her within a few seconds.
“Crystal! You’re alive, my baby is safe again!” cried Crystal’s mother, wrapping her arms around her daughter and crying while still in the water. Although Crystal was more intent on scanning the crowd for her rescuer - the mermaid as she thought. Avalon, Lorna and Rebecca were trying to make their way over to the small girl and her mother who were on solid ground now.
“Where is she?” asked Lorna franticly, grabbing the girl by the shoulders and nearly shaking her senseless.
“You mean the mermaid that saved me?” replied Crystal tilting her head to the side in wonder. Lorna was taken aback by the girl’s statement.
“I guess so,” said Avalon slowly.
“I don’t know where she went. We lost hold of each other in the deep part and I nearly drowned. Was she your friend? Are you mermaids too?” replied Crystal, before her mother dragged her away to the paramedics looking at the three with a worried expression on her face.
“That couldn’t be Elizabeth… could it?” asked Rebecca, looking at the other two for an answer.
“I wouldn’t be surprised a lot of weird things are happening lately. But why did Elizabeth go and listen to me?” replied Avalon, looking longingly at the lake before walking towards her bike.
“Do you think that Elli lied to us?” asked Lorna following Avalon. Avalon didn’t reply and there was silence all the way to the forest. So many questions so few answers, like was Elizabeth dead or not? Or did Elli lie to them about their powers? Those were a few of the questions that plagued their minds for the while…

I hope to finish it completely and get it off to a publisher within a few months… but until then. I shall leave you pondering about the end of the story.
Although I will have another few chapters describing the characters that I have mentioned already, and those who I have not. Like those from my own little world and a few other fairies and evil elementals. Thank you for everything and I hope you will buy my book if it ever gets published! Tootles!
