Silence

Chapter 3

Now at the age of fifteen, Kate figured she had a good handle on her powers. She made sure that she was happy one hundred percent of the time, in other words. She was spoiled beyond belief. What she said, went when it came to her parents. The same would probably go for her friends too…that is, if she had any friends.

None of her fellow students knew about her “unique” gift, but they all knew to stay away from the Surack girl, for all of their parents had told them that she was dangerous. However, Kate never cared nor paid attention to what the other kids said. In fact, she didn’t really care about other people in general.

Since she had been labeled as a danger child ever since the third grade, she had come to find the friendship in stories and fantasies. Every day after a treacherous school day, she would go straight to the local library, grab the first book she saw on the shelf, then sit down and read for hours on end. Kate would sit in that library and read whatever book she could grasp in her pale hands. Sometimes, she would read a story about a dream come true, or others, she would just read one about a girl who was popular and perfect in everyway. These were the stories she hated most. The stories about happiness given to one child made her feel neglected, for she had never known the true happiness of a friend or the warmth of a love. None of these came to her. The only emotion she ever had felt was the silence of the stories and the fear from her parents. She was all alone in her world of dreams.

I am sad to report that Kate had never felt the love of a mother or the comfort of a father in her entire life with her gift. Her parents did as much as possible to make her feel relieved and pleased but the disasters kept happening. What they didn’t know, and what Kate didn’t tell them, is that every person is only happy once they feel needed and have someone who needs them. Her parents never wanted to spend time with Kate in fear that they might trigger a tornado or earthquake. Therefore, she never had anyone need her.

I am glad to report, however, that all of Kate’s sorrow would soon be turned around by the arrival of the one special angel who would changer her whole life and gift forever. And his name, was Nikö.
