A truck stopped near the doorway to the middle school. Uncle Jade, or now on school property as Mr. Colorusso, stepped out of the truck and kept the door open for Kori. Kori squeezed out luckily, feeling as if she left her whole body behind. Joe slammed his door shut and sighed deeply. Kori approached him and he looked quickly away. Uncle Jade closed his truck door shut and appeared nearby of Kori and Joe.
“You guys go on inside. I’ll just be meeting—”
“Miss Travolta. I know.” Joe said stiffly. He smirked at his uncle and winked at Kori. Kori blushed furiously and thanked God for making this night dark.
“Isn’t she…Uhh…a substitute teacher?” Kori asked to break up the silence.
“Yes, now please go on inside before I take you guys home!” Uncle Jade pleaded. Kori and Joe nodded their heads and left Uncle Jade, who stood near his truck looking out for Miss Travolta.
“Are they going out or something?” Kori wondered. Joe stopped. Kori paused and faced Joe. “Are they?”
“Yeah.” Joe whispered as two girls passed by. They pointed at Joe and giggled silently. Joe grabbed Kori’s shoulders and shook her slightly, begging, “Please, Kori, don’t tell anyone! I can’t have the school knowing about my uncle and a substitute teacher!”
“Ok, ok…” Kori replied. Of course I won’t expose them, she thought. I’m practically afraid of my own shadow!
Joe jogged ahead and held open the door for Kori. Then they both neared the counter behind a talkative group of jocks.
“Name?” The teacher behind the counter asked once Kori was up. She smiled warmly at Kori.
“Kori Do.” Kori said.
The teacher took her highlighter and crossed off Kori’s name. “That’ll be 4 dollars.” Kori handed her the money and stood off to the side.
Joe went through the same procedure and met up with Kori. “Hey Joe!” A voice called. Joe grinned as his pals came rushing over. Kori backed off a bit, feeling a tad neglected.
“Hey guys! Thought you weren’t coming?” Joe slapped them all high-fives.
One of the boys with short reddish hair, a lot of freckles, and round, brown eyes replied, “Yeah, well…” He trailed off, unsure of what to say.
Joe smirked and turned to face Kori, beckoning for her to come. “Guys. This is Kori. I’m pretty damned well you know who she is.”
Every boy except one returned a confused look. “Kori,” Joe continued, ignoring the boys’ odd looks, “I’d like you to meet my pals. This is Keith, Riley, Troy, Raymond, and Dewey.”
Keith, stunning blond hair that looked close to Jesse McCartney’s hairstyle and shining teal eyes and a wonderful tan, held out his hand. “Hey how’s it going?” Kori shook his head nodding with a slight quietness.
Riley, brown hair that was hidden under a black backwards hat and mysterious green eyes, crossed his arms and mumbled under his breath.
Troy, curly black hair and cheerful blue eyes, shook Kori’s hand with intense happiness that made Kori do nothing but grin.
Raymond, (if I mentioned about his appearance earlier, please forgive me for I am too lazy to look back) long dark brown hair and piercing sea green eyes, just greeted with a, “What’s up?” and looked away.
Dewey, short black hair with bangs covering his black eyeliner eyes that revealed nothing but darkness, said or did nothing. Joe noticed this and said, “He’s sort of the shy, punk/Goth kid in our group. His real name’s Dwayne but we call him Dewey cause I thought that’d be close enough to his real name.” He forced the guys to move on ahead as he told Kori, “He went out with my sister cause they were just too much alike. She just didn’t like him because he would barely talk of his shyness, ya know?”
Kori nodded her head and followed Joe halfway. They separated to go into the locker rooms. Before Joe entered the boys’ locker room, he told Kori to meet him on the bleachers. Kori agreed and walked into the girls’ locker room at an extremely bad time.
Two girls were arguing about a guy that they both love. One girl slapped the other. What did the other girl do? Kori watched in horror as the other girl kissed the one girl smack dab on the lips. And here I ponder as to why I agree to come to this homophobic pit, Kori thought, hardly understanding what she had just thought.
