Stanza 1

“I’m sorry,

I can’t say much else,

I’m sorry,

But there is no one else,

It’s you that I want,

In my arms,

Not some other girl.

She lied to spite you,

But you should really know,

That it’s you that I want.

You really should’ve known.

That’s why I’m ending it,

Cos if there is no trust,

There’s no love there,

I’m just ending it,

I do love you,

But why don’t you believe me?

She lied to spite you,

But you should really know,

That it’s you that I want.

You really should’ve known.

The truth is darlin’,

I could’ve been yours,

For now and ever more,

Eternally yours,

But your mistake girl was not believing me,

So we really can’t be like this anymore,

And I shan’t be yours anymore.”

Max put down the microphone and looked to his band mates. Their mouths lay open with absolute satisfaction. He smiled. Flash put down his drumsticks and stared straight at his big brother with uttermost pride.

“Wow…Max! How did you write that?” Flash cried, jumping over his drum set and grabbing hold of his brother tightly. Max ran his fingers through his lengthy black hair and his brown eyes sparkled quickly.

“Natalie…” He said, drifting off. He turned away from Flash.

That song was written about Natalie and that witch Kellie? It is one of your best songs…have you finished with Natalie then?” Flash asked, running his fingers through his dyed dark blue hair. His blue eyes followed his brother with worry. Flash turned to his band mates Jason, Joe and Karl for assistance. They all got up from their instruments and stepped forward.

Max turned, pulling on his Led Zeppelin t-shirt and shuffling his baggy jeans, kicking up the dirt with his trainers. He was eighteen years old and had just broken off a four-year-relationship with his girlfriend Natalie. They had been very much in love, when Kellie had come along. She had driven a wedge between them and had tricked Natalie into thinking that Max was cheating on her. Max had been so concentrated on sorting things out he had almost forgotten completely about his band. Now, Max had put an end to their relationship, so that neither of them was in much pain for any longer. She had cried and so had he, but it was for the best. If there was no trust, then where was there a proper relationship.

“Yes…me and Nat…we’re finished.” Max said weakly. His band mates looked at each other in worry. Jason sighed, running his fingers through his curled gingery brown hair, fluttering his green eyes. He pulled his Nirvana smiley shirt a little and turned around in his green combat trousers. Joe shook his head and for once wished he hadn’t cut his black hair as shortly as he did. He rested his head on his electric guitar and closed his big green eyes. He was so glad he was just in his army jacket and a black vest with black jeans. It was more comfy than what he normally wore. Karl played a few notes on his keyboard, closing his grey eyes as he did so and letting the cold air brush against his blonde bangs. He dressed in a long black coat with tight blue jeans and a thick brown jumper.

“I’m sorry bro…I am really sorry. I know what you and Natalie were like…closer than close. I am sorry.” Flash murmured, looking mournfully at his brother. Max turned back to Flash and smiled weakly.

“I’m alright Phil.” Max said, using Flash’s real name. Flash turned red with anger and hit his brother in the arm. Max laughed.

“Guys…this band… it’s everything to us…everything! I cannot lose all interest in it over just one girl. I will not go down to that level. None of us should.” Max uttered in a more serious tone. His band mates looked to each other trying to figure out what he meant by this.

“Max?” Joe asked with confusion. Max turned to all of them, breathing heavily.

“Guys…this band…means so much to us. We…we must promise not to put a girl in front of this band. It would hurt us…our friendship. Any girl we take by our side…must come second while this band is still running.” Max declared. His friends looked to each other, then looked back at Max, broad smiles upon their faces.

“Definitely.” Flash whispered, nodding his head. Joe, Karl and Jason also nodded their heads and Max smiled gloriously. They were The Somethings. They were always going to be together and no one could stop that. Max only hoped his band saw what he saw…he felt that them being strong and pulling together would make them a great band.

--

3 years later

“Max…we’re on stage…straight after Linkin Park.” Flash called from behind Max. Max nodded and listened to the music. Linkin Park was still as famous as they were in Max’s teenage years, but now his own band overshadowed them. The Somethings had grown closer in the way that Max had expected. They were now covering all music magazines and were on practically every music T.V show that existed, and all of the band members had kept to their promises of putting the band first. Even when Flash had became engaged to Amy when he turned twenty. Amy obviously didn’t like his huge loyalty to the band, but resigned to the fact that his whole life and soul was in the band. She loved him for that and she loved their music. Joe, Jason and Karl had all had some pretty basic relationships, ending hastily when their girlfriends found out about the band’s agreement. It was Max who had never touched the boundaries of dating. Not after Natalie anyway.

“Max…we’ve gotta get on stage.” Joe squealed, jumping over a couple of wires. They walked on stage and took hold of their instruments, Max taking hold of the microphone. Jason started to play his bass guitar loudly, while Joe was playing his electric guitar slowly and softy. Karl started to play the tune on his keyboard, jamming out to the beat of Flash’s drum. Max drew the microphone nearer and began to sing:

“I woke up this morning,

My head hurt real bad,

Can’t remember,

What happened last night?

Did we or didn’t we?

Can’t remember,

I told you I liked you,

I topped up my drink.

You were with that bloke,

Where is he now?

Why are you with me?

And not with him?

Please move your arm,

I feel so confused,

I can’t remember,

Nothing at all.

Did we or didn’t we?

Can’t remember,

I told you I liked you,

I topped up my drink.

Please tell me why you look so upset,

I didn’t mean to,

It just came out my mouth,

I am sorry to cause offence,

But to be quite truthful,

I can’t think straight.

Did we or didn’t we?

Can’t remember,

I told you I liked you,

I topped up my drink.

Can we please talk?

Instead of to shout,

There’s not much point in raising our voices,

If I could remember how we got here,

In the first place,

Maybe I would know,

Why I feel misplaced.

Did we or didn’t we?

Can’t remember,

I told you I liked you,

I topped up my drink.

I topped up my drink.

Is it the drink talking?

Or is it just me?

Perhaps I would know,

If I could just remember.

Did we or didn’t we?

Can’t remember,

I told you I liked you,

I topped up my drink,

Did we or didn’t we?”

Max put down the microphone, drinking in the cheers of his fans voices. This was his band’s moment. They were shining, like they had never shined before. Glimmering in the dark night’s sky.
