Chapter one: revisited

Ellie sighed and rolled on to her stomach starring at the digital clock that sat on her bed side table. The red digits flashed 11:30. The night before had passed so slowly, nothing to do and no one to do it with, not that she wanted any one to do any thing with. She remembered flipping through the channels in the “entertainment room” then coming up stairs to her room to skim the pages of the latest “AP” magazine, which she had already read from cover to cover four days ago.

Life was really starting to get rather boring here in this small town. Even though Donna, her god-sister, had invited her to come to the bon-fire to meet “the locals”. I.e.: the classic high school bonfire where all the jocks and their cheerleader girl friends go to drink beers and have parties. So in true Ellie fashion she had opted to stay home on her own for another night. Which the Charlestons, her new guardians had allowed. Apparently they knew how hard it was for a teenager to loose her only parent, her father.

Ellie sighed again, rolling back on to her back to stare at t he ceiling which was a clean and neat looking white. No one could truly understand what she was feeling, first there was the dead father, then her crazy grand mother who seemed to enjoy calling her a “demon child”. Then the family that didn’t want her because their matriarch, her grandmother really actually believed she was “the demon child”. And now there was her new life, with her god parents in a small town. They were nice, so was Donna, but Ellie hadn’t yet ventured out of her safe house to meet the “locals”.

“Yes,” Ellie called hearing a knock at the door.

“Ellie, Ellie, Ellie, wakie, wakie, wakie” Donna sang waltzing into Ellie’s room and coming to sit down on her bed. Ellie looked less than pleased to see her, although she was actually happy to have some company, just not company who was this perky after spending practically her whole night on the beach.

“You, don’t look to happy.” Donna commented,

“Well I’m not too happy.” She responded running a hand through her hair which was splayed over her pillow.

“Great! I have just the thing that’ll make you cheery.” She sounded so happy; Ellie couldn’t help but wonder what this miracle cure for her blues was.

“I’ll tell you if you promise you’ll do it.” She teased. Ellie smiled, Donna was always like this, she always knew what was best for you, she was always organised and she always had time for leisurely activities, i.e.: going to the beach and watching movies.

“Ok the solution to all you problems is a day out of the house, with your host and local prom queen Donna Charleston!” at that moment Donna jumped up from the bed and threw her hands wildly around. Ellie laughed watching the blonde, this was definitely more interesting than T.V. She sat up on her bed and shrugged.

“Where are you gonna drag me this time?”

As Children the two always played, and Donna usually ended up dragging Ellie every where. From the jewellery store where the had spent endless hours starring at the beautiful rings that they hoped one day their fiancés would give them, to the candy store where they got their five-finger discounts to snack on things they weren’t allowed to buy.

“Don’t make it sound so bad Ellie were just going to go to the beach.”

“The beach? Is that all you people do around here? Go to the beach?” Donna nodded and shrugged.

“Pretty much until school starts then we go to school and the beach.” She laughed at her own joke.

“So get dressed and meet me down stairs in half an hour.” She said, it was a statement and what Donna said went. Ellie nodded as she left the room. This was going to be one interesting afternoon.
