Chapter One: Ship’s Only Secret
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A young girl scribbled away in a tiny book, a quill pen held to her lips and a lantern sat near her, giving off very little light. Her hands shook and her lips quivered. A smoky cloud came from her mouth and she shivered once more, a line of ink running across her page.
“Oh no,” she whispered, staring down at the paper with horror. She clutched the pen tightly and tears sprang to her eyes. She wiped them back with the back of her hand and she continued to write. In the upper right hand corner, the word Diary was scribbled. The girl kept on writing deep into the night, her lantern giving out slowly.
-------------
The girl finally awoke to find she had fallen asleep over her tiny book. She sat up quickly and glanced over at her lantern. The flame was out and there were no signs of any black soot around the area she was at. She let out a sigh of relief and sat up on her knees. Then she grabbed her stuff up and rocked back on one heel.
She clutched her book to her chest, the lantern hanging from the nook of her elbow. Her wide silver eyes darted around the tiny room she was hiding in to make sure she didn’t leave anything behind. Then she flew out of the room quickly. The lantern bumped and banged against her side and thigh and the book was jostled from her grasp. Her shoes echoed against the bare walls and she almost tripped over herself looking down at the ground. She pushed herself off towards the other wall and about slammed into the door that was there. Her long corn colored blonde hair flew out in tiny wisps behind her and her eyes were wide and gapping.
Her hand shot out and groped for the wall. She found it and she gave herself a push so she could keep running. The book fell out of her hands and she stopped and turned back towards it.
“No, no,” she whispered, staring at it with wide eyes. In a quick movement, she was on top of the book, reached down and grabbed it and was running again. Her footsteps still echoed behind her and she reached the door. She stopped, staring at it. The doorknob glowed a golden color almost and she grabbed it. Slowly, she pushed open the door. The moonlight shone through and she stared up at the moon. She blinked her eyes and frowned. She had forgotten where she was. And that was on a rocking ship.
She sighed and closed her eyes for a moment. Her heart was still pounding and her breath still came out in sharp, short pants. She hugged the book closer to her and set the lantern down. Then she slipped back into the shadows.
-------------------------------------------------
The rocking of the ship awoke her in the late morning. The sound of the waves slapping against the hull and the rocking making her seasick again. She opened her eyes slowly and stretched her arms above her. The sounds of the sleeping and the waste filled her ears and nose and she yawned softly.
