I know it’s over,
But I can’t help it.
My eyes wander across the room,
Until they find what they’ve been looking for,
The meet yours and a smile forms across my face.
I know, I know,
It’s over.
But, then why do you return it?
Why do you give that same smile back.
Class ends and I shuffle out the door,
Following aimlessly in the crowd,
Staring blankly at the ground,
Until I notice
A shadow next to me,
My eyes gaze next to me,
And I notice that you’re standing there.
You say you’re walking with me so I’m not a loner,
But is there a deeper meaning?
Why would you walk next to me,
Just as we had before,
Before I left you?
I flirt playfully,
Conversing as we walk,
Hoping I don’t make you mad,
You joke with me and
For a second,
My mind is not tormented with
my normal thoughts
of pain and loneliness,
but, I can’t think like that,
we are over,
aren’t we?
