Exits Stage DR. Scene 1: Curtain opens on empty stage

Mercy: Run in from Stage UR. Looks around and then runs to Stage DC and sits and cries. Why me? Why? Just tell me why?!

Tory: Runs in from Stage UR. Looks around and sees Mercy. Runs to her and puts hand on Mercy’s shoulder and tries to soothe her. Honey I am so sorry you had to find out what a jerk Drake was that way. You are too good for him and deserve someone much better.

Mercy: Still crying and looks at Tory. I thought he loved me! But he was only distracting me from training so that Sammy would win the Dance Competition today! Buries head and cries louder.

Tory: Looks at Mercy sadly. You were favored to win. Sammy needed to win to get the scholarship so she had her boyfriend Drake........

Mercy: Stops crying. Pretend to fall in love with me and distract me from training. I thought he really liked me! I thought he even loved me! And then I saw him and that, that, THING, kissing backstage! And him saying she was a shoe in to win. Stands and walks to Stage DL. Remains standing with hand on cheek and looks sad

Tory: Stares at Mercy for a second the walks after her. Puts arms around Mercy. Don’t cry sweetie. Were is the Mercy I know, huh? The girl that had the guys fighting over her and didn’t care if one dumped her because she had a thousand more to choose from.

Mercy: Looks at Tory. She was never betrayed like this. She had 3 titles and a bunch of friends. Now she is going to lose her best chance at making it big and has no one here to cheer for her all because of some guy that told her she only needed him.

Tory: What do you call me then? And Sara, Percy, and Lenny? We are here. And Tim, Betty, and Casey still are your friends. They just didn’t think you wanted them here today.

Mercy: Backs up from Tory It doesn’t matter now does it? I am not even going to go compete. What is the point? I haven’t trained for over 2 weeks and haven’t even practiced my new routine yet! I can’t win! I will be lucky if they don’t laugh me off the stage.

Tory: They won’t laugh at you. You are the best Mercy. That is why Sammy wanted you out of the competition. She knows she can’t beat you!

Mercy: I can’t win Tory!

Tory: Yes you can! You don’t need flashy new routines to win! You got true talent!

Mercy: Yeah, well plenty of people with talent never make it.

Tory: That is because they give up.

Mercy: Maybe they are right then. I don’t want to go on anymore Tory. I just want to go home and cry.

Tory: Pauses for a moment in thought. Remember that painting I did of you dancing last week?

Mercy: Yeah.

Tory: Remember how I wanted to scrape it and quit doing art because I seemed to have lost my gift?

Mercy: Yeah.

Tory: Do you remember what you told me?

Mercy: Tory that was different! You were just in a slump not.....

Tory: Cuts her off. What did you tell me.

Mercy: Looks down. That you were one of the most gifted people that should never give up even when your own self betrays you.

Tory: And you know were that painting is today?

Mercy: Still looking down. No.

Tory: Being hung in the local art gallery.

Mercy: Looks at her surprised Really! Tory that is great! Congratulations!

Tory: Thanks. And do you know what my next painting is going to be of?

Mercy: No.

Tory: You winning today’s competition and getting the scholarship and the appraisal of about 20 talent scouts.

Mercy: But Tory I can’t.......

Tory: Cuts her off. Mercy you can. If you quit now you admit that Drake and Sammy beat you. You go out their and dance your heart out. Put all that rage and sadness into your dancing and you are going to win.

Mercy: Do you really think so?

Tory: I know so.

Mercy: And when I am touring Europe in 4 years as the star of the stage......

Tory: I will be at every performance I can make.

Mercy: And when you are a famous artist..........

Tory: You will be at all my shows you can make and have my paintings in every room of your house.

Mercy: And when you and Percy get married in 2 years....

Tory: You will be my maid of honor.

Mercy: And right now while I am going to go and knock the socks off the judges and Sammy and Drake....

Tory: I will be back stage waiting to tell you how good you are. Tory and Mercy hug.

Mercy: Can I ask you a favor?

Tory: Anything.

Mercy: Can you have Percy write a story about how much a dork Drake is?

Tory: Already in progress. Names have been changed to protect the innocent but it will be posted on his web zine tonight Mercy and Tory laugh. Tory puts arm over shoulder of Mercy and the walk to Stage UR, then off stage still laughing.

Curtains close. Scene 2: Curtains reopen on 2 girls. 1 CLOVER is sitting Indian on floor. The other RAVEN is standing about her looking angry.

Clover: Hi! Hi! Raven! How are you doing?

Raven: Not good if I am seeing you.

Clover: What does that mean?

Raven: It means the medication is not working if we are still seeing each other. Now shut up so the doctors’ think everything is normal.

Clover: BUT IT IS SO BORING! There is nothing to do all day when you are gone.

Raven: It is good when I am gone. It means I am okay.

Clover: But I am not! I am so lonely without you. The pretty flowers are dull without you and the teddy bears do not go and have picnics when you are not around.

Raven: GOOD! Maybe they will all vanish and everything will be all right.

Clover: If they vanish I will be here all alone and by myself because you keep on going further and further away from me.

Raven: Clover we are different people. I am dark and anti-social when you are little Miss Goody Two-Shoes. There is nothing in common here.

Clover: Okay I will try to darken down a bit, if you lighten up! Then we can be a perfect medium.

Raven: No, no medium. The only way to be happy is to totally split up! Be gone from this plain entirely! Be away from the dancing flowers and singing llamas. Away from this fantasy world. In the real world with regular people, seeing regular places, and doing normal every day things.

Clover: That sounds boring. I rather go drink from the Lake of Chocolate and have tea with Mistress Bunny Rabbit. She knows the newest gossip on Lord Hippy-Hop!

Raven: I don’t care about them! None of this is real Clover! Don’t you see that.

Clover: This is real. All of this is real. And all of this is happy.

Raven: Clover! Listen to me! The real world is not all rainbows and sunshine.

Clover: Of course it is not. It never rains here so there are no rainbows. That is the really bad thing about it. Hey! I got an idea! If you want rainbows we can go and find one! Then you will be happy.

Raven: NO I WON’T! I WON’T BE HAPPY UNTIL YOU ARE GONE!

Clover: But I don’t want to be gone. I want to stay here always.

Raven: You can’t. I can’t. We have to leave. You have to leave.

Clover: But why?

Raven: I gave you all the reasons why! I don’t belong here.

Clover: Yes you do. You belong here as much as I do!

Raven: You don’t belong here either.

Clover: Were do I belong then.

Raven: In a place that is not here. As do I.

Clover: But I like it here.

Raven: I hate it here! Nothing is right. Everyone is happy all the time! The sun is shining everyday, yet flowers bloom without water. Candy grows on trees! Animals talk. You are here.

Clover: What is wrong with me? I am just like you.

Raven: No, you are not. You and I are totally different.

Clover: Don’t get into all that personality difference again.

Raven: That was not what I meant.

Clover: What do you mean then?

Raven: You don’t understand. You never do.

Clover: I understand a lot of things!

Raven: Then you will understand this Chokes Clover.

Clover: NO RAVEN! I CAN’T BREATH! LET GO! YOU ARE KILLING ME!

Raven: I HAVE TO DO THIS CLOVER! I HAVE TO DO THIS TO BE HAPPY!

Clover: Raven, no please, please, no.

Raven: Good bye Clover.

Clover: NO RAVEN! NO!

2 people carry in bed from Stage L and sit it a little of C. Another, MAMA carries a chair and sets it down on the left of the bed. RAVEN drags CLOVER over to bed and puts her on it. RAVEN and changers exit Stage R.

Mama: Clover, baby, please! There is no Raven. Please Angel come back to me.

Clover: Mama! Raven killed me! She said we didn’t belong there!

Mama: Clover, noone has hurt you. You were having one of your episodes again sweetie.

Clover: But she killed me! I can’t go back! I am dead.

Mama: Clover that is wonderful!

Clover: That I was killed? Mama that is horrible!

Mama: No darling. Now you are going to be okay! You can come home to Papa and me.

Clover: You and Papa? But what about Mistress Bunny Rabbit and Lord Hippy-Hop! And Raven! Even though she killed me, she is still my best friend.

Mama: Honey you have had a disease for the past two years called schizophrenia. It makes you see things that are not real.

Clover: Like Raven?

Mama: Yes like Raven.

Clover: Does that mean I can go home to you and Papa?

Mama: Soon baby soon.

Clover: Okay Mama.

Mama: Now go to sleep.

Clover: Yes Mama. Mama exist Stage L Goodbye Raven thanks for everything.

Curtains close and reopen. Scene 3: 2 girls stand Stage C on opposite sides. CHARITY stands Stage CR next to table with a phone on it. She is looking at the audience pretending they are a mirror and putting on make-up. SERENITY stands Stage CL taping foot.

Serenity: Hurry up! We were suppose to have left 7 minutes ago!

Charity: I’ll be ready in 5 minutes. Just hold on and be patient for once.

Serenity: You said that 20 minutes ago. I don’t believe you.

Charity: I would have been ready if you haven’t been yelling at me every minute.

Serenity: I HAVEN’T BEEN YELLING AT YOU!

Charity: YOU JUST DID!

Serenity: THAT IS BECAUSE YOU ACCUSED ME OF YELLING!

Charity: THEN PROVE ME WRONG BY EXAMPLE NOT BY YELLING I AM WRONG!

Serenity: FINE! This better for you?

Charity: Much. Phone rings I’ll get it. Picks up phone and puts it to her ear.

Serenity: Should I just call and say we aren’t going?

Charity: Serenity I am on the phone! Be quiet.

Serenity: Charity, Mark is going to kill us if we aren’t there and didn’t tell him.

Charity: Little sisters! Can’t live with them and mom will kill me I got rid of her.

Serenity: Your no Miss Popularity in my book either!

Charity: Serenity, Jason is on the phone!

Serenity: Your silly little boyfriend again! If you hurry up we can see him at the party.

Charity: Hush! Pauses Of course I am going to be there. Pause David? Pause Of course I remember him! Pause He did? Pause Of course she would. Pause I am certain she will! Pause See you there! Pause No you hang up first! Pause No you! Pause No you Pause No..

Serenity: I will hang up the phone! Storms to Stage CR and takes phone from Charity and slams it down. Remains Stage CR.

Charity: Serenity that was rude! We were in the middle of a conversation!

Serenity: We don’t have the time for the stupid ‘I don’t want to hang up on you first’ thing.

Charity: You don’t understand because you don’t have a boyfriend.

Serenity: That is because I am not a girly girl like you who thinks my boyfriend makes me.

Charity: Your just jealous.

Serenity: Of what? Jason?

Charity: Of course Jason! And you need not be jealous of my prefect boyfriend.

Serenity: And why is that? Because your delusional if you think Jason is the prefect guy.

Charity: No. Do you remember David?

Serenity: Jason’s cousin that happens to be my age that is moving in next we...... YOU DIDN’T!

Charity: Didn’t what?

Serenity: YOU DIDN’T TELL JASON I WOULD DATE DAVID!

Charity: Serenity I am right here no need to yell.

Serenity: Charity tell me you didn’t?

Charity: For the last time, didn’t what?

Serenity: I am not going to date him!

Charity: Why? He is nearly your age, popular, smart, athletic, and thinks your are extremely pretty. Although Jason did say that is only because you are my sister. Wasn’t that sweet?

Serenity: No on both accounts. I will not date David and Jason isn’t sweet.

Charity: Give me one good reason why you aren’t going to date David.

Serenity: I got a million! Phone Rings. And will tell you as soon as I get that. Picks up phone and puts it to her ear.

Charity: You just don’t want to admit that the closes thing to a prefect guy that isn’t Jason wants you.

Serenity: Shut up! Pause Hey Paige!

Charity: That little weird girl that keeps snakes is calling us! GROSS!

Serenity: Pause She says she loves you too. Be nice she is my best friend! Pause He did? Pause Your joking?! Pause I can’t believe it! Pause Of course I will be there! Pause Yeah, see you soon. Bye. Hangs up phone and does a victory dance. YES! Go Serenity it’s your birthday, it’s your birthday.

Charity: What are you so happy about?

Serenity: Paige said that Kyle said that Tony said that Amy said that Greg said he hoped I would be at Marks party! Can you believe it.

Charity: Greg? That guy who plays guitar for that rap band called Sweat something or other?

Serenity: It is a heavy metal band called Sweat-Shirt!

Charity: So why is he better then David?

Serenity: He just is!

Charity: Why?

Serenity: Charity you are my sister right?

Charity: Of course I am.

Serenity: Can I tell you something?

Charity: I am all ears.

Serenity: Ever since I have been little, you, Mom, Dad, and Lee have wanted what was best for me. Lee was the athlete of the family, you were the beauty, and I was the brain. Well I got tired of Dad wishing I was another son and Mom wishing I was more girl like. I became envious of you. We were born only 15 months apart and it just seemed Mom and Dad preferred you over me. And for a long time I wanted to be like you. I wanted to be just a pretty face, a future model, a rich man’s wife, not a doctor, or a lawyer. But then I saw I wasn’t that. I was me. I didn’t want a future senator to date me. I wanted a rebel. And I still do.

Charity: Serenity, no one wanted to change you.

Serenity: What about Dad making Lee train me in how to play baseball and Mom making me only wear dresses and letting use makeup before you, huh?

Charity: They knew you were different. You were always the smart one Serenity and always will be. Dad thought you needed a break from the books, that is why he wanted you to play sports. Mom thought you were too mature, so she let you play dress up to remind your of your age. Serenity your were already much older then me when you were 5. Mom and Dad didn’t prefer me over you. Have you ever heard them say ‘I wish you were more like Charity.’?

Serenity: No.

Charity: I thought so. They tell me they wish I was more like you all the time. They love us both. And I am sorry I gave you a hard time.

Serenity: Same here.

Charity: Does this mean we are going to hug and become best friends.

Serenity: If this conversation leaves this room you diary will be published in the next school newspaper.

Charity: Deal.

Serenity: Pleasure doing business with you.

Charity: It always is isn’t it?

Serenity: Yeah.

Charity: Hug! Attempts to hug Serenity, Serenity blocks her with a hand.

Serenity: Touch me and I will kill you and eat your soul.

Charity: Fair enough. Now come one let’s get ready to go!

Serenity: Yeah Mark is going to kill us for being late. Phone rings I better get that. Makes to get phone but is stopped by Charity.

Charity: Don’t! We are late enough as it is!

Serenity: Fine, I will let the machine get it. Both exist Stage CL. Answering machine kicks in.

Monotone Female Voice: You have reached the home of Andrew, Prudence, Lee, Charity, and Serenity Reach, please leave a message after the beep.

Mark: Hey it is me Mark. I just called to tell you my parents decided to cancel the party. So don’t come over. Also Jason told me to tell you that he doesn’t want to date you anymore Charity. Sorry he is such a jerk. Also that Paige and Greg left together after I told them it was canceled. I hope you haven’t talked to either today. Okay bye! See you later!

Curtains closes. Scene 4: Jasmine reenters from Stage DR and stands in front of curtain.

Jasmine: Drama is an everyday occurrence. The most dramatic show is your life. It is not rehearsed, it has no reruns, and it cannot be stopped or fast forwarded. It is one time action. No recording or rewinding. Exit Stage DL. Lights fade.
