Chapter 1—Late Bloomer

Sanura sat in her window seat looking out at the ocean, watching the waves crash on the shore as a slight drizzle fell from the heavens above. She sighed as her green eyes cast upward to look at the moon. It was a full moon, and it was the night of her sister’s initiation. The official initiation into the Wiccan world. All her sister’s were getting the initiation. Jamila, Nakia, and Chione were all going to finally be apart of the Wiccan world. And she wasn’t. She was, as Jamila so gently called her, a “late bloomer”. Her magick hadn’t quite fully developed.

“I haven’t gotten past my levitation spells yet,” she thought dismally.

She wasn’t getting anywhere and she couldn’t do anything about it. So, tonight, she got to watch the whole town come and honor Jamila, Nakia, and Chione. While she sat in the crowd, alone, with her late blooming skills.

“Sanura! Darling! Come down stairs, we need to prepare for the initiation!” Neith, her mother called from the bottom of the stairs.

Sanura sighed again. Why was she so different? It took her a while to cope and understand the powers that were slowly blossoming inside her, but even in the Wiccan world, not having fully developed her powers by the age of 14 was definitely different. In the Wiccan world, all the girls started developing and learning to hone their powers at age 12. They managed to get their powers in complete control by the age of 14, and their initiation was either on their 15th birthday, or sometime in the years between 15 and 16. otherwise you weren’t considered an official witch. You were still a witch, but not an official one, which wasn’t considered good per say. Sanura was 14. Jamila was 16, and Nakia and Chione, the twins, were 15. Jamila had taken a little bit longer to hone her powers too, but not as long as it was taking Sanura. Their mother, Neith, had been fast and had had her initiation at age 13. Which was rare, but was done. Sanura was the only one different. Why? That wasn’t fair. She wasn’t any different from her sister’s aside from looks! She had inherited her mother’s black hair. It wasn’t anything unusual.

Sanura went downstairs and into the living room, where Neith was helping Jamila put on some makeup. Sanura was already in her dress for the initiation, but her sister’s got to wear the color of their Wiccan names. Jamila was to become Moon, so she wore a very pale white dress, Nakia was to be Topaz, so she wore a golden/orange dress, and Chione was to be Amethyst, so she wore a purple dress. Sanura knew she was supposed to be part of that group. She was supposed to be apart of her family. But, for some reason, she wasn’t.

Neith looked up at Sanura and smiled at her and said in that quiet voice of hers, “Here Sanura, help me put back Jamila’s hair.”

Sanura obediently did so, all the time with a straight face on, eyes downcast.

Suddenly, Sanura spoke, “Mother? It’s not fair. I want to be part of the initiation, but….but….”

Neith stopped what she was doing and gently stroked Sanura’s cheek, “Sanura. Your powers are just a bit late in blooming. You don’t have to worry about it. They will develop in time.”

Sanura looked her mother in the eye, tears streaming down her cheeks and said, “But, how long will it take for my powers to come out? I don’t want to stay an unofficial witch! It’s just not fair! Jamila and Nakia and Chione all have their powers and are part of the initiation!”

Neith started to smile, but at the forlorn look on her daughter’s face, she couldn’t bring herself to. Instead she hugged her quickly and said, “Well, it’s almost time to go. So, go wash your face, grab a piece of chocolate, and let’s go.”

Sanura nodded, and shuffled into the kitchen. She washed her face and grabbed a small candy bar. She read the wrapper to see what kind of chocolate it was. The wrapper said “Journey!” and in smaller print it said “unleash your destiny with the chocolaty goodness”. Sanura laughed to herself, why would someone put that on a candy bar wrapper? She went to put it back, but to her surprise, there wasn’t any other bar in the bowl. Only another Journey! wrapper. “Huh. I was sure there were more bars! Oh well.” Sanura said to herself as she pocketed her candy bar.

Silence overcame the already hushed crowd as they respectfully waited for the Priestess to finish off the initiation of the three Saunderson girls. When the initiation was finally finished, everybody bowed as the three girls walked down an aisle. Sanura stood by a tree, leaning against it glumly eating the chocolate bar. Then the party started. There was music and dancing and everybody was telling the girls how grand they were, and how beautiful they had looked. Sanura wasn’t part of the group, instead women were saying things to her like, “We hope to see you next year” or “You still look beautiful” or “I could help you practice your spells”. Sanura felt out of place and like she didn’t belong, so she finally felt she couldn’t stay another moment. She ran, and ran, and ran, and ran, and ran. She eventually collapsed on a beach, she didn’t know where.
