Dregs of Winter

The dregs of winter have come

The snow is soiled

The sky is pale

Do you remember that summer?

We walked these streets at night

The stars were kissing our eyes

Hiding the grayness of the path

Softening the pebbles in our bare feet

You said you’d give me the world

I said all I needed was you

You laughed, and the moon sang

Now I walk alone

Through torn and blackened snow

Slush sleeps on our path

Our stars are hidden in a cloudy sky

The sunlight caresses the treetops

Gazing disdainfully on the spent and spoiled world

Would you give it to me now?

Would you gather the gritty globs of snow?

Would you toss the skeleton leaves into my hands?

Leaving them to crumble under my fingers?

Or would you deny me even these sparks of recognition?

There is nothing in your eyes now

Not even the pain that you must see in mine

But do you?

No

You turn your head away from me

The dregs of winter have come

And summer is lost forever
