I cannot

remember what

was said exactly.

The sunlight’s

half-shadow on

our faces,

its affectionate warmth,

filtered through the windshield,

though little due to impending

pre-autumnal rainfall,

welcomed only

the beautiful union of souls.

His short glances

over at me:

shifting eyes,

loosening his grip

of the steering wheel,

hushed moving lips and

smile lines—

all fixed

in my memory.

On an afternoon

of amorous awakening,

his presence so new

and familiar still

I stood outside

reluctant to end this

by shutting

passenger side car door

behind me.

Sun fading,

And all ourselves to tell,

I felt known for the first time.
