Happy Birthday

This world
is as empty as my heart,
save for the occassional
wanderer or gull.
There is no sign of life here,
only parked cars
and empty stares.
A light breeze ruffles the trees,
a hissing reminder of the lack
of all other sounds.
Two decades of confusion
and sometimes despair:
how much longer?
