Band is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. I know what you’re thinking, “wow, what a band geek.” Well, it’s kinda true. Even though I may sometimes deny it, I know that I really am. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing to be a band geek, but some people think that it is.
The first day I played a flute was in fourth grade. My elementary school started music a year earlier than all of the other schools in the area. The first note that I could ever play was a B flat. It was a little airy, and not quite in tune, but I was proud of myself none the less.
Thanks to band, I knew a bunch of people even before high school started…and not only freshmen that had come from my previous school.
Thanks to band, I figured out how to prioritize my time, and therefore got much better grades.
Thanks to band, I found the first guy that I ever truly liked.
Thanks to band, I am never late to anything.
Ah, yes, band. My favorite thing. I remember the worst times in band…like the time that Mr. Whaley yelled at me for stopping during the big pass-through at the end of the second movement of our show last year. That was really scary…especially since the people that I had to pass through never left enough space, and I had to play (flute) at the same time. Not fun. There was also the five times that I had to switch spots last year…and had to learn the entire show from people who didn’t really like me that much. Then there was also the fact that along with learning a marching spot, I had to learn how to move the little pexiglass boxes that the soloists played in. That also wasn’t fun.
But, the good times outweigh the bad. There were all of the football games that we went to. That was fun, mainly because we never had to pay. Then there were the rallies. We got to sit in our own little section in the back of the gym, away from all of the “normal” other people.
And then, all by its self, there was the winning. My school was state champion last year, but barely. We also won the Jeffco Marching Festival, Regionals, and were exhibition at the Pomona Marching Festival. That’s right; I am part of the Pomona Marching Band in Arvada, Colorado.
Now, I’m not saying that I’m cocky or anything, but I enjoyed the feeling that I had played my best, knowing that I couldn’t do any better, that I couldn’t march any better. Even though I did. At Nationals, we placed fourteenth. I’m not saying that I wasn’t disappointed in not making finals, because I was. I felt defeated. But, this story isn’t about me, well it is, but not like this…this is a story about my experiences in band.
