The dagger sliced through the still night air, its course silent and deadly. Its sharp blade gleamed for a moment as moonlight glanced off of the brilliant silver, revealing the dagger’s perfect dance. Every spiral, every twist, every turn: long perfected with years of practice. It was art in the most lethal form.
With a final plunge, the dagger ended its waltz, burying itself in the back of its victim. Death was instant.
100 feet away, a lone girl turned and walked away. Her long brown ponytail swished against her back and her eyes were emotionless. Her task was finished.
.
A gray dawn had descended upon the misty forest, a white ray of light washing away the murder of the previous night. A corpse lying on the soft green grass was the only reminder that anything had happened, and even the corpse was void of any blood or mess. The man could easily have been sleeping, if it were not for the dagger protruding from his back.
Seth glanced at the dead body and nodded with grim approval. “Nice work.”
The girl shrugged. “It was easy.”
Her features were illuminated by a warm soothing light, but the coolness and deadliness in her face was unmistakable. Her light brown hair was pulled back into another tight ponytail. She had high cheekbones, a perfectly sculptured nose, a proud chin, and pale lips. Altogether, she would have been rather colorless, if it wasn’t for her eyes. They were defiant eyes, dangerous, cold, and so terrifyingly dark…
Seth met her dark gaze with his own gray one. In his late forties, Seth had retained the swiftness and strength of a 20-year-old. His muscles were well-toned, and his large build immensely powerful. It had been he who first began finding recruits in hope of beginning a deadly regime. And it was he who had first found Andrea, 5-years-old and stranded in the middle of a dark street, her hair in tangles and her eyes red with crying.
Seth studied the girl. She was 18 now and had grown into a beautiful woman. Beautiful, but lethal. Seth smiled inwardly at the appropriateness of her weapon choice; the girl was identical to the daggers she weld: coldly elegant and dangerous.
“Sit down Andrea,” Seth commanded, and watched as the girl obeyed silently. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a folder. He opened it and thumbed through the pages, his eyes scanning the information. “Good,” he murmured. “Richard did his job well.” He abruptly closed the folder and tossed it to the girl, watching as she caught it and opened it.
If Andrea felt any shock after reading the contents, she did not show it. Her gray eyes remained cold and indifferent, the mark of a good killer.
“I’m sure you know there’s an election coming up for Prime Minister,” Seth began. “The candidates are Joseph Thomson and William Galton, both men of extreme power. Their bios are in the folder. Thomson has the current popular vote. He’s scandal-free, and the people trust him. Galton has hired us to destroy his image, and then to get rid of him.” Seth paused. “The pay is over a billion dollars Andrea,” Seth said. “It’s the largest assignment we’ve had in a long time.”
Still, Andrea showed no emotion. “What do you want me to do?” she asked, looking up from the folder.
“We need information on Thomson. Unfortunately, he’s pretty damn good at concealing his personal life.” Seth gritted his teeth. “But I have discovered another link. Thomson has a son…turn to page four. He’s 18 and a senior at Lakewood Academy. Boys his age are immature, rash, and don’t tend to think of consequences. In this case, we should be able to take advantage of it. We have enrolled you in Lakewood as a transfer and worked out your schedule so that all your classes overlap with his. You don’t need to worry about homework, we’ll hire someone to do that for you. All you need to do is concentrate on getting the boy to trust you, and then getting him to tell you what you want.” Seth stopped and caught Andrea’s eyes. “This will be different from what you’re used to doing. No weapons, no killing…I know you haven’t dealt with people in a long time, not to mention befriend someone…” Seth hesitated.
“I can handle it,” Andrea snapped. Her black eyes flared up for a moment, then descended back into icy indifference. “Do not doubt me Seth.”
“I’m not,” Seth replied.
“But others are.” Andrea’s voice was abrupt and to the point, carrying a layer of sarcasm and bitterness behind it.
Seth examined the girl. So much anger and hurt hidden behind such cold brilliance and skill…Seth’s features softened for a moment. “It doesn’t matter what others think. I do not doubt you, and until I do, no one else will dare.”
The two stood in silence for a moment, until Seth’s cell phone began to ring. He left the area for a moment to speak, and came back 5 minutes later.
“I have to leave. I’ll probably be gone for another week. Richard will manage while I’m gone. Read the information over, and meet with Zack back at the den. He’ll give you a…makeover, to make you look more like a high school student. He’s already gone out and bought a couple of outfits.” Seth turned to leave, but titled his head back. “Remember, school starts on Monday.”
School. Andrea had left school in the middle of Kindergarten a lost girl, and was now returning 13 years later a murderer. She felt the irony of it all, but did not smile.
Flipping to page four, she began to skim, none of the information surprising her. The boy’s name was Ryan. He was on the football team, had average grades, and seemed to change girlfriends every week. She turned to the picture and glanced at it briefly. The boy was obviously good-looking. He leaned against a wall in the picture, his pose full of self-confidence and ease. A smirk graced his lips, and his long blonde hair fell over tantalizingly blue eyes. The eyes. They were mesmerizing. So amused, cocky, and…satisfied. Something Andrea had never been able to achieve. Andrea quickly shut the folder and stood up, pushing the memories the picture had instigated behind her. She had a job to do, and she wasn’t going to let anything interfere.
Anything.
