Bittersweet

Without the bitter there would be no sweet.

Memories so fragile like the kiss of a cool breeze
Floating across the dark ocean
Whisk me away into a deep sleep

Iawaken to pain, an abyss of great sorrow
Betrayed as his distant shadow towers over me

A shattered heart within his hand
A pale light punctures my soul

Joy and sincere happiness
As I look back toward that which I overcame

But only if those hurtful moments were gone
Kept away in the darkness of eternity

If only they could be erased from mind
Never to be dug up and replayed

And yet, even if they were blanked out
Erased from the heavens above

Happiness would lose all meaning
For there would be nothing to compare it to

No black or white to differentiate the two
No pain, no true joy, just a blur of gray

No entity to tell the sweetest memories
From the simply sweet

Memories how they linger and fall
Upon my heart like a wave upon the sand
Singing the lullaby of life

Without the bitter there is no sweet.

A/N: Well I'm not sure if what I wrote did a good job illustrating what I wanted to say. In any case I was just trying to say how even though painful memories aren't nice to remember, it's those very memories that make us smile when we remember the sweet ones. And it's those memories that make the sweet, sweeter.
