I remember a line from that movie, Bull Durham, that goes: "I believe in the church of baseball." I remember hearing that when I was young, just young enough to think that there might actually have been such a house of worship, and at age seven, being dead set on renouncing the Catholic faith in favor of the Church of Baseball.

I realize now that I have.

I'm not really much of a man of God anymore and sometimes, I wonder whether he's even still listening to me, but all I have to do is look at the breathless perfection of a baseball field and know that he's up there somewhere, trying to guide me home.
