You stretched out your hand,
holding the present before me;

beautifully wrapped in paper
a thousand shades of the rainbow
and ribbon
as bright as your smile,
held it all together,
so your gift wouldn't crumble.

Another insincere smile
fell upon your lips
as I took it.

I figured out
the instant I opened that box,
you didn't care about me.
But I joined the hallucination
and said
"thanks."

Did you know?
You're my favorite liar.

Insincere as you are,
I feel in love
With the idea somebody cared.
Fabricated stories
and alluring words
ensnared me.

I've always known
that you weren't genuine
but I love to pretend.

Who knew
that one simple gift
could give so much away?
The inside was empty
and the tag read
"trust."
